175 Years Of Education

There’s a celebratory air at this Lancashire school which is marking a special anniversary in 2019, writes Kate Ford

There’s always a buzz of excitement at Rossall School when the new term begins after the Christmas break. Pupils return with stories to tell and memories to share, and there’s a genuine joy to be witnessed, as friends are reunited once more.

In 2019, there’s even more of a buzz than usual because, this year, the school is celebrating its 175th anniversary. Since its foundation in 1844, Rossall has developed into one of the country’s leading independent schools, where boys and girls from two to 18 enjoy unrivalled facilities in a friendly and supportive environment.

Whether day pupils or boarders, all students benefit from the sense of community which prevails at Rossall. In 2019, they will celebrate their history with several events aimed at bringing together all members of that community.

On Wednesday 1st May, every pupil will participate in a 17.5km walk or run, from St Annes back to the school in Fleetwood. Pupils will seek sponsorship from family and friends, with all monies raised being used to help finance the school’s new sports hall, set to open in September 2019.

“The distance from St Annes to Rossall just happens to be 17.5km, which fits in well with our 175 years,” says Nancy Fielden, marketing manager. “Everyone is taking part and most pupils will probably walk the distance, but some will choose to run.”

“The younger children from the nursery and infant school will join the walk at different points along the course, so they can be involved too.”

Later in the month, on Friday 31st May, the school is holding a 175th anniversary ball, a black-tie event which will take place in the dining hall at Rossall. Thornton’s Twelve Restaurant will cater the ‘Through the Decades’ themed event and there will be live music complemented by a DJ.

There will be an auction and a silent auction on the night and, again, all funds raised will go towards the new sports hall development. Tickets for the ball are £90 each or £175 per couple, and tables of 10 can also be booked. For ticket information, please email: 175@rossall.org.uk.

The new two-storey sports hall will benefit the local community as well as the children at Rossall. This impressive new building will be the latest addition to a campus which is already brimming with facilities to support the learning and extra-curricular activities of the Rossall community. These include a performing arts studio, astronomy centre, golf academy, and 25m swimming pool.

All these facilities can be seen at Rossall’s open day taking place on Saturday 2nd March, when the whole school will be open from the nursery through to the sixth form. Teachers and pupils will be available to answer questions and chat about school life. Another open day on 6th May bank holiday is for the senior school only (11 to 18 years).
