A Beautiful Living Space
A new extension to a busy family home has created a beautiful, yet practical, living space where time is spent together. Photography: Vanessa Fry
When Gill and Henry Russell-Blackburn decided to extend their home to create an open plan kitchen and family room, they contacted Katie Green at Heart of your Home Kitchens to turn their dream into reality.
The couple, who have two young children, had a good idea of how they wanted their new kitchen to look and how they wanted it to work as a living space where they could enjoy family time.
“They had a really strong vision of how they wanted their new kitchen to look,” says Katie. “They wanted a large island where all the family could gather together and where they could also entertain.”
While building work was ongoing Katie drew up the plans for the couple’s new kitchen: “At this stage my only input was specifying where the electrics were needed. Once the building work was completed, my fitting team went it to install the new kitchen.”
Gill and Henry chose Fitzroy cabinets in stylish Hartforth blue and Dove grey from the Second Nature collection, quartz Chicstone worktops in Glaciem and Neff appliances including an eye-level oven, combination microwave, a fridge-freezer, induction hob, island extractor, dishwasher and wine cooler.
“This was a really lovely project to work on,” adds Katie, who knew Henry as a friend from her schooldays at Westholme. “I hadn’t seen him for many years, so it was especially nice to work with someone I had lost touch with.
“Gill and Henry wanted the kitchen to be a social space as there is also a sofa, dining and seating area. As a family it’s nice for them to be able to gather together in the same part of the house.
“For me it was all about getting the right balance when drawing up the plans. The finished installation has worked out really well and the project ran smoothly. We have created a beautiful and practical family space.”
Gill, a chartered accountant, adds: “The extension took a few months to build, but once that was done the kitchen came together really quickly. We more or less knew exactly what we wanted but we were also guided by Katie.
“The extension is a great family space incorporating a TV area, dining room and kitchen with a large island unit,” adds Gill, who chose Karndean flooring in the colour Honey Oak to complement the kitchen.
“It is also a great entertaining space – when we have friends round everyone gathers around the island unit.
“We both enjoy cooking, so it’s ideal for both family and leisure time as everyone can socialise while we cook. It really does work very well – we love our new kitchen!”
