A three-storey family home built into a hillside, has been transformed thanks to a beautiful new open plan kitchen and dining area

A family pizza night was the inspiration for the re-modelling of a stunning basement kitchen in a three-storey family home in Ilkley, West Yorkshire.

The designer behind the transformation was Simon Thomas of Kitchen Design Centre in Colne, who was approached by Bill and Becky Fazackerley when they made the decision to re-fit their kitchen, as Bill explains: “There was actually nothing wrong with the old kitchen but the layout just didn’t work. The house is built on a hillside and the preparation area, sink and cooker were on a back wall that didn’t have much light. We wanted it to be more liveable and sociable. When we have a pizza night we wanted to be able to sit around a table and talk – that was the brief.”

Bill and Becky, who have two children, had a good idea of how the kitchen could be re-worked, however designer Simon came up with some ingenious ideas that led to the kitchen and dining area being totally opened up flooding it with natural light with views over the garden and the Wharfe Valley.

Bill, who is a keen cook, can now socialise and interact with guests in the dining area while he is prepping food and cooking, while the family’s pizza nights are now enjoyed around a ‘floating’ circular eating area off set to one side of the island.

Offshore pipeline engineer Bill, who works in the US, and Simon devised a bespoke steel structure to attach the five foot circular area to the island – the steelwork was then boxed in using textured concrete to match the base unit doors, easily enabling the whole family to come together around the ‘floating’ table with ample leg room.

The Fazackerleys collaborated closely with Simon to choose a colour palette of gloss Natural White and matt textured Putty Concrete Pearl Grey for the German-manufactured Hacker base units, using gloss Atlantic Blue and Bronze Mirror as accent colours and a white and grey glossy veined quartz worktop.

A wall was demolished to make the kitchen and dining room totally open plan with underfloor heating and a beautiful hardwood floor running throughout the ground floor.

“From a design perspective Simon made significant changes to what we originally suggested but they are fantastic!” adds Bill, whose wife works as a volunteer co-ordinator for a charity.

When designing the kitchen Simon added subtle yet effective LED lighting and when it came to storage he added a tall bank of units framed with Putty Concrete to house top-of-the-range Neff appliances including an American fridge freezer. One of the main features are inset units in Atlantic blue with decorative Bronze Mirror above to reflect the light and ease the transition into the dining area as well as creating extra storage space with USB sockets for tablet and phone charging.

To suit their busy family lifestyle and Bill’s love of cooking, the Fazackerleys chose a Neff slide and hide oven with pyrolytic and steam features, plate warmer and a ‘point and twist’ flex induction hob that is built into the island adding a social element to family cooking.

“One of the main challenges on this project was creating a large open family space with the many appliances required for functioning family life,” says Simon.

“Another challenge was project managing various trades to ensure the project was delivered in a manageable timescale and on budget without compromising on the finish.”

Bill adds: “One of the reasons we went with Kitchen Design Centre was their quote – it was much more competitive than any of the others we received.”

The Fazackerley family are delighted with their new kitchen, which has been transformed into a practical living space that flows throughout the ground floor: “It is much more of a family area now,” says Bill.

“We are thrilled with it and we can now have our family pizza nights sitting around a table altogether – it’s just so much more sociable!”
