A Growing Business…

Brothers Pete and Chris Bristol sowed the seeds of success two years ago when they launched Newlands Nursery in the heart of the Ribble Valley.

Their aim was to develop a thriving hub with home-grown plants at its heart. Fast forward and today the nursery is filled with plants that are hardy and grown to specifically withstand our northern climate.

The two multi-span tunnels provide the perfect environment for plants before they are moved outside to harden off in readiness for replanting in gardens throughout the region.

“We have customers travelling from all over the North West,” explains Pete. “We have a lot of customers from the Yorkshire Dales and Skipton, which is quite a way to travel but they are attracted by the fact that our plants are home grown and represent great value.”

Plants at Newlands are grown from bare roots, seeds and rooted cuttings and are lovingly tended throughout the growing season by gardening experts Pete and Chris, who have worked in horticulture throughout the country since their early teens. They attended Myerscough Agricultural College where they spent three years studying for a National Diploma in Horticulture and after leaving, worked on nurseries as well as garden landscape and maintenance for 15 years.

Newlands is a dream come true for the brothers – their extensive nursery in Chatburn has been transformed into a plant haven – all backed up by eco-friendly credentials including an irrigation system using rainwater captured on-site.

Open from mid-February right through to late November, Newlands has new perennials coming through all the time, which are ready for sale. Over the coming weeks there will be bedding, hanging baskets and a series of ever-changing plants on offer. From alpines and perennials to fruit and vegetables, this nursery has everything gardeners need for spring planting and there is always someone on hand to give expert advice: “There’s always one of us on site to meet customers and tell them what we think will grow well in their garden,” explains Pete, who along with Chris, are delighted to offer their loyal customers more choice and variety thanks to extra capacity and more growing space at the nursery.

At Newlands both novice and expert gardeners will feel at home amidst the comprehensive collections of alpines, perennials, bedding plants, hanging baskets, shrubs, hedging, fruit and vegetable plants.

“Here at Newlands we are purely plants – that’s what we concentrate on and that’s what we do best. We are plant specialists and grow everything that we know will thrive in this area.”

As a family-run nursery, Newlands looks forward to welcoming gardeners to their site, where there is lots of friendly advice from the experts!
