A Hidden Gem

If you fancy somewhere off the beaten track that offers quality food, great hospitality and stunning views, then Thurnham Hall is the place to go, writes Tracy Hargreaves

Thurnham Hall is a 12th century country house that stands proudly in a stunning estate of nearly 30 acres, situated just five miles south of Lancaster.

Not somewhere I had heard of until I recently paid a visit and enjoyed a meal there. I’d spent the afternoon in Lancaster, mooching around the city and castle before heading off to Thurnham Hall.

The scenery en route was stunning and you forget what a lovely part of the county Lancaster is. Magnificent moorlands and fells, canals and market towns. As Thurnham Hall is also home to 60 luxury self-catering apartments, both in the hall itself and in purpose-built accommodation, it’s a great location to explore the local area.

We had opted for an evening meal and instantly on arrival I was impressed with the elegant Jacobean Great Hall as you walk in. The dining room was small and classy, hosting around 30 covers and the ambience was perfect for either an intimate dinner for two, or a small gathering with friends and family. Greeted by friendly staff, we were shown to our table and presented with the menu. On looking I knew straight away this was going to be a meal I would enjoy.

For starters I opted for the smoked chicken risotto, with broad beans, peas, roast garlic and tarragon. The dish looked like a main meal itself, but it was so flavoursome I didn’t have any trouble finishing it. My friend chose the heritage heirloom tomatoes with homemade ketchup, peppered goat’s cheese and basil. I’m not sure if Thurnham Hall has its own greenhouse, but the tomatoes looked as if they had literally just been picked an hour before, they were so fresh.

We both had the same main course which was breast of duck, duck leg bonbons, charred Hispi cabbage, sweet potato puree and anise jus. This was simply mouth-watering and in fact conversation stopped whilst we just savoured every taste.

Of course, the meal wouldn’t be complete without pudding. We chose banana beignet, red berry granola with Walling’s banoffee ice cream and sticky toffee pudding and Walling’s vanilla ice cream.

We retired into the lounge for tea and to soak up the surroundings. We simply couldn’t fault anything. The service was impeccable and the food amazing.

Thurnham Hall is a hidden gem but one worth finding. It can cater for all occasions and even has a Chapel Bar in which they serve breakfast if you are staying in the accommodation or you can get married in, as long as you are Catholic.

It’s a beautiful place, whatever time of year and one which I will be making sure all my friends know about.
