To make your Christmas extra special, pay a visit to Holden Clough Nurseries and Garden Kitchen to experience some delightfully festive events
As we approach Christmas, at Holden Clough Nurseries the festive season will see a whole host of super-seasonal events.
Visitors to the nurseries, established way back in 1927, will be treated to an array of traditional Christmas decorations and gifts as well as a selection of British grown spruce and Nordman non-drop Christmas trees in varying sizes.
Of course all the usual home-grown plants and herbs will still be at Holden Clough that groups plants and shrubs by association so visitors know exactly what will thrive in their own garden. In the run-up to Christmas there will also be natural wreaths and garlands as well as a bespoke wreath-making service offered by Holden Clough, which is also set to hold a wreath-making afternoon class with Prosecco and canapes – just the job for those who want to design and make their very own unique wreath!
While the festivities at Holden Clough just get better every year, this year is set to be exceptional at the new-look nurseries, which has also become renowned for the delicious festive fayre from the Garden Kitchen.
There is a new Christmas afternoon picnic presented on the now-famous miniature picnic bench, while the chefs have also developed a new Christmas menu that represents great value at just £20 for three mouth-watering courses.
Diners opting for the Christmas menu can expect heart-warming split pea and ham hock soup with tarragon cream or warm Roquefort, pear and walnut tart among the starters while main courses feature turkey schnitzel with goose fat potatoes and all the trimmings, slow cooked lamb shank in red wine, or fennel and spinach risotto for vegetarians. Among the desserts is a classic Christmas pudding, a chocolate tart or for something a little lighter, raspberry delice.
The 22nd November will see Holden Clough light up when Holden Clough owners John and Kate Foley’s new baby daughter, delightfully named Rose, will be the guest of honour switching on the Christmas tree lights. There will be carol singing, mulled wine and mince pies – a wonderful winter warmer!
Also in the run-up to Christmas, Holden Clough will be hosting a festive Open Weekend featuring a selection of hand-picked artisan food and drink producers as well as traditional crafts and decorations.
And once the big day is over visitors have New Year to look forward to at Holden Clough where the Garden Kitchen has a special New Year’s Day menu from 12 noon to 5pm.
Diners will be treated to a selection of three courses – all equally delicious!
Expect to see slow cooked blade of beef and celeriac mash, pan fried sea bass or poached gnocchi with roasted butternut squash among the mains and a deliciously warming ginger parkin served with custard and golden syrup among the desserts!

Join John, Kate and the team to see the start of the festive season with a Christmas lights switch on by baby Rose Foley. Enjoy carols by candlelight with children from local villages. Mulled wine and mince pies.
