A SPLASH OF COLOUR

Bring life to your garden with an array of hanging baskets

Hanging baskets are a specialty at Newgate Nurseries. Each basket is hand crafted on site using over 30 years’ experience. “It’s been passed down the generations,” says current proprietor Michael Cookson. “We provide baskets to councils, businesses and private customers and we’ve won many gold medals for our work. It’s our passion.” All the plants that go into Newgate’s baskets/containers are grown on site at the nursery. Michael talks us through his top 10 hanging basket plants.

1 Bacopa Snowflake – this vigorous creeper is covered with masses of snow-white flowers all summer long
2 Begonia Illumination – a stunning series of double rose like flowers are repeated on bold green foliage. Great for shade
3 Surfinia – this vigorous trailing petunia is now available in colours from yellow to black. Great in hot summers but dead heading is required
4 Nemesia Lyric Series – this scented upright plant is great in the centre of baskets
5 Calibrachoa – this mini petunia requires no dead heading and tolerates poor weather
6 Verbena Twister Blue – a more upright variety which has stunning violet and white flowers
7 Brachyscome – this tiny blue daisy gets masses of flowers and looks great in a basket next to Begonia Illumination apricot
8 Sanvitalia – this creeping yellow daisy looks stunning next to blue Surfinia
9 Trailing Geranium – a great plant for a basket as it likes to dry out
10 Bidens Solaire – bright yellow or orange composite flowers on delicate ferny foliage.
