A Tropical Paradise Awaits
Preston-based travel expert, Joanne Wilson, looks at the Caribbean island of Barbados where beautiful beaches and exciting island adventures await
As the new season springs to life and we approach the Easter holidays, for many people getting the family together is top of their list of things to do and what better way to make memories than to take a special trip.
Luckily, whatever the weather here in the UK the sun continues to shine on an ever-popular holiday destination nestled in the Caribbean sea. And with a ‘dry’ season spanning from December to June, Barbados offers the perfect getaway for all generations.
This iconic island isn’t just about striking beaches and crystal-clear seas, it’s also a hub of adventure and discovery. Whether your family loves thrills and spills, or taking it slow to soak up the scenery, there is a host of activities to delight all ages and abilities.
If your family loves a mix of nature and excitement, the Harrison’s Cave Eco-Adventure Park is the place to start. Here, kids aged six and up (and grown-ups too!) can soar 100 feet above the forest on the Monkey Zipline. With panoramic views of the island, it’s a high-flying, adrenaline-packed adventure you won’t forget.
Further adventures lie in discovering the island’s natural beauty and local crafts. Stroll through the botanical garden of the Flower Forest and marvel at its explosion of colours and exotic blooms. With stroller-friendly paths, it’s perfect for little feet and wheels alike. Then, swap sunshine for a magical underground experience as you hop on a tram ride through Harrison’s Cave, a natural wonder that was unknown until the 18th century. Next, head to the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, one of the best places to see the island’s fauna as it used to be. The ‘caves and critters’ tour is aimed at families, making it a great option to entertain young and more experienced travellers alike.
Another great option is the Victorian steam railway to Cherry Tree Hill, which is run by St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway and features a narrated ride around the abbey grounds. The view from the steam train seat lets you admire the 17th-century Great House, woodlands and spectacular Atlantic views.
Last but not least, dive into Barbados’ amazing marine life without even getting wet. The Atlantis Submarine Tour lets you descend 150 feet below the surface to uncover a hidden underwater world from the comfort of an air-conditioned submarine. Wide panoramic windows give everyone a front-row view of vibrant coral reefs, majestic turtles gliding past, tropical fish darting about and even a historic shipwreck, or two.
So, if the UK weather lets us down, this Caribbean gem offers the chance to head to sunnier climes, with fun for all the family.
