ACORN TO OAK TREE

The Hodder Valley Agricultural Show can trace its roots back to 1864 and, now in its 74th year, it has grown into one of the best loved shows of its kind attracting upwards of 3,000 visitors

This year’s Hodder Valley Show, to be held on 8th September, looks set to be bigger and better than ever with a whole host of attractions and exhibits.

Agricultural shows are rich in history and key elements of farming life. They bring the community together and while much has changed in the farming landscape, the concept remains the same – to showcase the best of our rural heritage.

Today the Hodder Valley Show prides itself on being a traditional agricultural and horticultural show – and a perfect family day out. Held on the second Saturday of September each year, the show is unique in that it is hosted in turn by farmers of Dunsop Bridge, Newton-in-Bowland and Slaidburn so no two years are the same. At each venue visitors enjoy fabulous scenery with breathtaking views in the Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This year the show is being held at Duckmire Farm in Slaidburn and promises to give visitors a giant slice of rural life. The agricultural section is a vibrant showcase for native and continental breeds with over 95 cattle and 245 sheep exhibited. The livestock classes culminate in a fabulous main ring Grand Parade Finale.

There will be speed sheep shearing and sheep dog trials with dogs and handlers never failing to impress, while in the horticultural tent local gardeners, bakers and floral artists will showcase their skills. There will also be a food hall bursting with delicious local produce and the craft tent is set to be a treasure trove of delightful exhibits.

There will also be a fell race, trade stands, obstacle course and various competitions throughout the day.

The main ring educates and entertains with new attractions each year – there will be vintage tractors, musical interludes with the rousing Saidburn Silver Band and not forgetting of course, the traditional egg-catching finale in which all visitors of any age can take part – a sight to behold!
