All The Flavours Of Summer…

Tedd and Liz Walmsley enjoy a great-value lunch overlooking the beautiful gardens of the Gibbon Bridge

I’m not sure there is a better backdrop to have lunch in the Ribble Valley than the Gibbon Bridge on a sunny day, so Liz and I jumped at the chance to road test their delightful new summer menu in the main restaurant.

On arrival we were shown to our table with the trademark crisp white table linen and beautiful fresh flowers direct from the stunning gardens outside, a feast for the eyes when combined with the view of the gardens and the fell beyond.

Whilst synonymous with incredible weddings, it would be wrong to forget how good the food is at the Gibbon Bridge. The new menu is varied, with a tasty seasonal flavour to it.

In fairness I had to make a short-list from the starters but finally settled on the legendary potted shrimps with Liz opting for her favourite, salt and pepper squid. Both were excellent and were served with a basket of homemade bread to mop up the delicious juices and butter.

We were joined briefly by Janet Simpson who told us about the produce from the garden and her passion for using local producers. It’s amazing to think that she has been achieving this level of quality food for nearly 40 years – testimony to her dedication and the support of her team.

Onto the mains and my fillet of hake wrapped in a delicate wild garlic mousse was both light and flavoursome and cooked to perfection. Liz chose the more robust shin of beef with creamy mash and both our mains were served with a selection of seasonal vegetables – both were superb and devoured with enthusiasm!

We had made sure we left room for a decadent homemade pudding and what a choice we had – all served with either custard, cream or ice-cream (or a combination). Liz opted for a timeless classic of warm apple pie with cream and my sticky toffee pudding was exactly that – sweet, sticky and absolutely delicious.

I also think I need to point out that the new menu is incredible value with one course at £20, two courses £25 and all three for £30 – bread and vegetables are all included in the price so no hidden extras. If time allows mid-week, please visit for lunch or an early supper – like Liz and I you won’t be disappointed.
