AN ICONIC SETTING

Tedd Walmsley takes a tour of Samlesbury Hall and discovers a whole new world of honey bees and hamlets, witches and waffleries and a rich history that dates back centuries

Samlesbury Hall is one of the most iconic and stunning stately homes in Lancashire. Steeped in history and intrigue with tales of ghosts and witchcraft, it attracts visitors from far and wide. The hall is also an award-winning wedding venue and the recent addition of its shepherd’s hut hamlet offers quirky accommodation in a unique setting.

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and this is certainly the case at Samlesbury Hall, which is fast becoming one of the best Ribble Valley haunts for fantastic food and drink. Serving the very best ‘Full English’ using locally sourced ingredients, they also cater for those with a slightly less robust appetite by offering a selection of lighter bites and of course the hall’s own honey from the bee centre and their home-made jams – perfect for smothering over crumpets and toast!

Lunch at the hall is served between 12 noon and 3pm and the menu reflects the diversity of our local produce with fish from Fleetwood, meat from Bowland and herbs and vegetables picked from their own gardens. A special note are the sweet and decadent traditional homemade puddings, which are, unsurprisingly, very popular and truly divine! Local ales and a selection of great value wines including their very own Samlesbury Merlot complement the food perfectly. Look out also for the recently-added Friday chippy lunch – a true Lancashire favourite! Booking is essential and represents incredible value for money.

That other great British institution, afternoon tea, is also available served both inside and out with an ever-changing menu that makes this one of the signature dining experiences – definitely one to sit back, relax and enjoy. A perfect balance of sweet and savoury, all home baked to perfection. We must of course finish on the ultimate sweet sensation of Dotties – the onsite wafflery. Mouth-watering, cool milkshakes and wonderful waffles will have your taste buds tingling with scrumptious delight!

I’m hoping I’ve given you a flavour of what’s on offer at the hall – they richly deserve their burgeoning reputation producing wide ranging great food. There’s so much more to see and do at Samlesbury Hall, I’d recommend a visit to the website and following them on social media to keep up with the events there. Who knows, you may even be sitting next to a witch, or the resident ghost may make an appearance!
