Finding beautiful yet practical solutions is what kitchen designer Katie Green does best. So, when she was approached by a Burnley couple who asked if she was able to design a very special kitchen for their smart bungalow home, Katie at Heart of Your Home Kitchens jumped at the challenge!

The couple, a retired electrical company sales manager and his wife a former teacher who has MS, were keen to enlist Katie’s help in designing a wheelchair friendly kitchen which presented her with a whole host of exciting design opportunities.

Having seen an article about Katie’s work in Live Ribble Valley magazine, the couple visited her at Heart of Your Home’s stunning showroom in Waddington where they talked through exactly what would be required.

“We had been discussing a new kitchen for a while and when we read about Katie and her ability to work closely with her clients to find solutions in especially tricky working spaces, we decided to go and see her,” explain the husband and wife duo.

“Many of the places in the old kitchen were inaccessible and that’s what we wanted to change. The height of the hob was also a major problem, as was the oven.”

“As soon as we started talking to Katie we were amazed at how many different adaptations would be needed but she assured us that they could all be done and she was able to supply all the necessary equipment.”

The couple were keen to secure a kitchen design company that manages the whole project completely and efficiently, eliminating the need for them to find their own tradesmen.

“What we soon realised was that Katie was the ultimate professional when managing a project – and that was important to us. She took control of everything and it went like clockwork.”

Once the bespoke design was finalised, the couple chose Langham solid wood cabinets painted in the colour Alabaster. Katie then set about sourcing an innovative solution for the hob that would make it height adjustable and would sit neatly into the worktop.

The Granberg Baselift 6200 has an inbuilt electronic facility that allows the hob to be moved smoothly up and down at the touch of a button, which enables full use of the kitchen’s cooking facilities for the first time in years – making this a totally life-changing experience for the couple!

A Neff slide and hide oven and combination microwave with warming drawer were installed side by side at a lower level than is usual. Installed next to the oven and microwave is a concealed pull out work surface where hot pans can immediately and safely be placed.

A wall was knocked down to make the whole kitchen area more accessible and every cupboard, top and bottom, has a pull-out storage solution. Even the contemporary extractor fan is turned on and off by a neat little remote control.

Katie recommended a Neff fridge and freezer which were installed to allow ease of access. Katie’s engineer husband has also been involved, creating a prototype handle to enable easier and smoother access to some of the pull-out shelves in the wall cupboards.

“Katie has been absolutely marvellous!” agree the couple, who have three children and four grandchildren. “She was constantly calling in to check everything was going well throughout the installation and she regularly kept in touch by text and email. She knew exactly what she was doing every step of the way and is extremely professional and approachable. We have got our kitchen back and we love it! We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Katie.”

The kitchen at the couple’s bungalow represents a stunning transformation – it is light, airy and modern with a whole host of practical appliances that sit neatly and discretely within the contemporary working space.

For Katie, the kitchen truly reflects her eye for detail and her keen sense of innovation – finding practical solutions that fit seamlessly into her designs.

“It was a challenging, interesting and different kind of project to work on. It introduced me and my installation team to some fantastic, innovative products that are really practical for those who have limited mobility,” says Katie.

“I am delighted that my clients are so pleased with the end result.”
