Best Of Both Worlds

We all have our goals and dreams. Achieving them is the hard bit. Nigh on impossible unless you are prepared to compromise. So, is it simply unrealistic to imagine ever realising ‘the best of both worlds’?

Not, it seems, when it comes to cars and one car in particular – the new BMW iX3.

It’s electric – in every respect. No compromises required here.

BMW’s first pure electric Sports Activity Vehicle is not only efficient in the extreme it’s also eye-catching and exciting.

A true trailblazer for this era of electric mobility, perfectly serving the needs of the moment, it has sporting prowess, exceptional performance and long-distance ability with a range of up to 286 miles.

Driving pleasure, ease of operation and great character, inside and out, make this a stand-out motor.

We’re talking Vernasca leather, metallic paint, 20” aerodynamic black alloy wheels, automatic tailgate, panoramic glass sunroof, sun protection glass, automatic air conditioning, adaptive LED headlights, parking assistant, driving assistant professional, heated front seats, wireless charging, acoustic pedestrian warning and ambient lighting.

As for the drive, you’ll find a highly-integrated system with electric motor, transmission and power electronics in a single housing. Maximum output: 286 hp, peak torque: 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), acceleration (0-62mph): 6.8 seconds. This is the true power of electric driving, constant and instant acceleration to give any road trip or adventure extra thrills to savour.

The high-voltage battery has a gross energy content of 80 kWh (kilowatts an hour). A combined charging unit enables direct current charging at a rapid rate and a 10-minute fast charge adds around 100 kilometres (62 miles) of range in the WLTP cycle.

Stop right there! Just what, I can hear you asking, is WLTP?

Well, it stands for Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure – the name for the test that decides fuel efficiency ratings for all petrol, diesel, electric and hybrid cars. Snappy? No. Important? Very much so.

As for equipment, there are two lines to choose from, ‘Inspiring’ and ‘Impressive’ including a mix of aforementioned goodies plus adaptive suspension, automatic tailgate operation, electrically adjustable seats, sport leather steering wheel, a storage package and a three-zone automatic climate control system with pre-heating and pre-conditioning function, head-up display Harman Kardon surround sound system and BMW Iconic Sounds Electric (more of that later).

It wouldn’t be a BMW without an exceptionally wide selection of driver assistance systems and with the iX3 the following come as standard: Driving Assistant Professional with Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, automatic Speed Limit Assist and route monitoring, Parking Assistant with Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant.

The Live Cockpit Professional with cloud-based navigation system, BMW Maps and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant also come as standard along with smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto preparation.

Last but not least, let’s talk about sound. Together with one of the world’s most famous music composers, Hans Zimmer, BMW has developed the aforementioned Iconic Sounds and it features right here in the iX3. Simply press the start/stop button, and you’ll be surrounded by the full emotional thrill of electro-mobility!

For peace-of-mind electric motoring, a new app recommends battery charging stops on long routes, showing the estimated charging time required.

The iX3 features the latest BMW Operating System 7, enabling secure and convenient over-the-air updates to ensure your system is always up to date.

BMW continues to spearhead the creation of an extensive UK network of charging facilities, which is constantly growing to meet the dramatic rise in popularity of electric cars. From easy-to-use public charging stations to convenient home charging solutions, topping up is a cinch.

All in all this is some package – a fully-electric vehicle that answers so many questions (not least over peace-of-mind driving) and one that takes ‘Efficient Dynamics’ to the next level.

Electric driving with the exciting possibilities offered by this modern masterpiece is to be embraced, not feared.

BMW engineers set out to produce a highly-desirable car whilst striving to set a new benchmark in terms of efficiency.

With the iX3 they’ve managed it – truly the best of both worlds.
