Scruples 1984 has undergone a complete refurbishment. Newly opened with fresh branding and architectural design, to build on its already established ethos of high-quality, new manager Tom Orrell chats to Gail Bailey about the next phase
Situated in the heart of Barrowford since being established in 1984, Scruples 1984 has relaunched!
“We’re very much the same Scruples, carrying with us all the good from our first 38 years. We have just upgraded the store to refresh the feel and customer experience for the next 38!” says manager Tom Orrell.
“Our bespoke shopping service hosts the same warmth and relaxed welcome we’ve always had, with more to offer in our beautiful luxury store. We are now home to some phenomenal autumn/winter collections including some exclusive pieces from our very own Rupert Totti – beautiful Italian garments, featuring the finest craftsmanship the industry has to offer.”
Stephen Collins, director and founder of Scruples in 1984 remains at the helm and has recently been joined by son-in-law Tom, who brings a new vibe to the menswear retailer.
Tom explains: “Stephen has a wealth of knowledge, experience and success following the last 38 years of trading in Barrowford. I am able to join with a shared ethos of garment quality and customer experience. We have expanded our range of brands in-store for the autumn/winter 21 season, which has continued into our buys for spring/summer 22.
“Our personal, bespoke service is something which Scruples has prided itself on over the years, and the new store allows for us to step it up a gear as we look to build on what we already have, and compete with the leading stores across the UK.
“We offer a bespoke made-to-measure service which hosts a huge collection of fabrics, linings, buttons and designs. We work with some of the leading fashion brands from across Europe – Italian giants Pal Zileri, Swedish brand Stenströms and ETON shirts have a home in both our formal and casual collections, offering made-to-measure shirts and little, personal touches that are perfect for a gentleman’s gift.”
Legendary English label Belstaff remains a best-seller in store, with additional ranges including an extensive wax-jacket collection, winter-wear and denim. Plus, limited edition pieces as they’re released.
New to Scruples 1984 for autumn/winter 21 are collections from DSquared2, JOOP!, Tramarossa jeans, LØCI trainers, Guide and Parajumpers. These collections have brought a new vibe, fitting-in well with the established brands in-store to give a refreshed feel.
Scruples’ expansion has also stemmed away from just the shop – building a warehouse to the rear of the property has freed up shop space to make way for increased customer interaction.
Tom continues: “Stephen and I have lots of plans for Scruples 1984 moving forward. The extra space we have built will allow us to develop further as we grow as a retailer and as a brand. We have linked up with local bar and eatery Will’s, also in Barrowford, to offer free drinks and/or lunches on selected purchases in the store. We have some shopping events to look forward to, especially as Christmas fast approaches – please keep an eye on our social media for updates on these. These will be hosted at later dates in November and throughout December.”
Sustainability is also a consideration for the Scruples 1984 team, who are in the process of switching to recycled paper bags – they are also a stockist of LØCI trainers which are up-cycled from ocean plastic, plant seed labels and a recycled jeans line from HandPicked.

“Scruples is a shop for everyone, and we have a warm, relaxed welcome for all – both existing customers and new. Scruples has grown, and with that we have invested massively in the shop to ensure we can continue to compete in the fashion sector. It’s a whole new Scruples experience – and it’s fantastic!”
The new Scruples website is currently under construction and will be live for the new year. However, their social media is active and will keep you up to date with brands, offers and events.
