CELEBRATIONS ALL ROUND

On a day of celebrations as students receive impressive GCSE results, this famous Lancashire school is marking another historic milestone, writes Kate Ford

It’s Thursday 22nd August and the pupils of Rossall School are celebrating their GCSE results, particularly the dramatic rise in the percentage of top grades achieved. Friends are laughing together on the lawns outside the historic buildings of this famous school, comparing grades and making plans.

It’s also the very day when Rossall celebrates the 175th anniversary of its foundation in 1844. Over the last year, pupils, staff and friends of the school have commemorated this milestone with a variety of events involving every member of the school community.

Rossall is one of the country’s leading independent schools, where boys and girls from two to 18 enjoy unrivalled facilities in a friendly, supportive environment. The stunning architecture on campus reflects the school’s rich heritage while, inside the buildings, the state-of-the-art equipment and technology demonstrate that this is a school which embraces the modern world.

Headmaster Jeremy Quartermain joined Rossall a year ago. He says: “I’m absolutely thrilled by these latest results and tremendously proud of our Year 11 pupils.”

“This is a truly outstanding school where everyone benefits from being part of an intellectually exciting and culturally dynamic community. Pupils are nurtured within a supportive environment which focuses attention upon each individual whilst ensuring a vibrant and inclusive school environment.”

The school’s commitment to excellent pastoral care was reflected in a recent report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The report rated the quality of pupils’ personal development as excellent and commented on the real sense of belonging and camaraderie between pupils.

In a true display of teamwork, pupils participated in a whole array of events to mark the school’s 175th anniversary, including art competitions, sporting challenges and musical performances. With all monies raised going towards the funding of the new Sports Centre, pupils returning to school in September will be delighted to see the fabulous new building ready for use.

This £4.2 million facility is an impressive, two-storey building housing an indoor sports hall with provision for indoor hockey, basketball and cricket, a four-lane 50m indoor sprint track, long jump track, gymnasium, new changing areas and an upper level viewing gallery overlooking the all-weather sports pitch.

The Sports Centre is the latest addition to the already first-rate facilities at Rossall which include an Astronomy Centre, Performing Arts Studio, a Golf Academy, cricket pavilion, squash courts and a 25m indoor swimming pool.

With so many outstanding facilities, and a programme of extra-curricular activities to enable pupils to make the most of their free time, Rossall is a school where youngsters can truly develop their full potential.

“We celebrate all our students’ academic achievements and we’re intensely proud that they leave us as confident and compassionate young people,” adds the Headmaster. “We also help them to identify their individual interests and talents, and to develop a strong desire to make a positive contribution to society.”
