CHILD’S PLAY

Colour texture and detail all play a key part when creating a child friendly space

A child’s bedroom, or playroom, is one of the most well-used areas of the home so it’s important to create a warm and cosy feel that cushions bumps and falls as well as cutting down on noise made from the patter, or stomping, of tiny feet!

According to Cormar Carpets, colour, texture and detail all play a key factor in designing a child-friendly space. The right environment needs to be inspiring, creative, relaxing and comforting for little ones – so it’s important to consider flooring when creating this perfect room.

“The advantage of having carpet in a child’s bedroom or playroom is that it provides comfort and warmth, cushions noise and is often budget friendly,” says David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar Carpets.

“Choosing a carpet doesn’t need to be difficult. There are important things to consider – such as type, colour and price – but for a child’s space you should ideally be looking for a carpet that will stand up to all the knocks, accidents, spills, sticky fingers and general rough and tumble of family life.”

New generation super soft carpets such as Cormar’s Primo Plus or Apollo Elite make the perfect pick. Both are made from polypropylene, a great family friendly fibre, that is easy to live with and simple to clean. Dirt and stain resistant and bleach cleanable, they retail from around £17 per sq m.

In a nursery or playroom, choosing a neutral coloured carpet means you can combine with strong colour on the walls. A bold earthy shade is warming and fun. Team with hardwearing wooden furniture and get creative with shelving and colourful prints.

For a child’s bedroom, it’s best to stick to more soothing shades for a more serene environment. Cosy, soft, easy clean carpets are ideal and should always be combined with a good quality, new underlay for added peace of mind.

In terms of colours, keep walls minimal and accessorise with bright baskets and storage tubs which are great for decluttering at the end of the day. If you want to inject a splash of colour, you could consider placing a large rug in the centre of the floor.
