CHOOSING YOUR FUTURE

While Stonyhurst College offers traditional A levels plus the International Baccalaureate, it now offers an additional careers-related qualification that is becoming increasingly recognised by universities

Since 2013 Stonyhurst College has been offering students the opportunity to study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD) as well as for A levels. However the College is now extending and expanding its educational offering for 16 to 18-year-olds with the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) that engages students in career-related study.

While A level continues to be a popular choice among students, offering a further two routes of study with the IBDP and IBCP, students have more options to tailor their educational foundations to suit them and their future career.

There is a growing group of schools and colleges offering the IBCP, which is also recognised by universities worldwide.

“The IBCP combines vocational and academic educational needs and is most suited to those students who are already passionate about pursuing a specific career,” explains Mrs Deborah Kirkby, who leads the IB courses.

“Universities are becoming increasingly familiar with the IBCP.”

The IBCP at Stonyhurst will be offering career related studies in Sport and Business, which will allow students to delve deeper into their subjects as well as two related academic subjects that are teamed with IBCP cores to develop employment-related skills.

The Sports IBCP sees students studying in one of the finest sporting environments with a wealth of facilities, while the Business IBCP develops students’ entrepreneurial skills.

All faculties at Stonyhurst offer a broad learning environment and if students choose to go down the traditional route of A levels they can expect to fulfil their potential through the exceptionally high standard of teaching.

If students have a clear subject preference, A levels provide an excellent opportunity to study fewer subjects in more depth and at Stonyhurst students have a wide choice. From photography, textiles, music and drama to sports science, psychology and politics, students can choose three or four subjects and they are also given the opportunity to choose an additional qualification such as an EPQ to offer even more breadth to their A level subjects.

Stonyhurst’s 2017/2018 A level results saw 71 per cent of students achieve grades A*- B with 58 per cent gaining places at Russell Group universities. Students gained places at Oxford and Cambridge to study engineering, natural sciences and medicine.

Neil Hodgson Head of Higher Line (Sixth Form) explains: “It is our responsibility to develop each individual to the point that they feel able to fulfil their potential in whatever field that may be. By the time they leave we want all Higher Line students to feel ready and prepared for the world beyond the school, ready and prepared to lead and inspire others.”
