COLOUR OF 2020

Pantone Colour Institute have announced Classic Blue as the Colour of the Year for 2020

The expert panel at Pantone Colour Institute describe Classic Blue as: “A deep shade that’s at once comforting and relatable. The indigo hue brings to mind both the constant and the classic – the sky at dusk, an impeccably tailored suit, serene waters or a bowl of perfectly ripe blueberries.”

Antonia Wheeler, Design Director at Arighi Bianchi adds: “Classic Blue has always been a firm favourite from accessories to velvet chairs. The colour provides a timeless elegance and works in every season.

“As a top pick for living spaces, Classic Blue can make a loud statement while maintaining calmness and tranquillity. The colour lends itself perfectly to velvety textures, providing a luxurious sheen to soft furnishings and accessories. We see the use of Classic Blue as part of the 2020 oceanic trend that combines the rich shades of our seas to create a calming and relaxing environment.

“Introduce Classic Blue into your seating with a buttoned corner sofa or set of quilted dining chairs – perfect alongside rich mahogany furniture, with hints of gold and brass, or rich emerald green. Or, to add a splash of colour to your current decor introduce plump blue velvet cushions and a plush faux fur throw.”

Matt Thomas, Design Director at Apollo Blinds explains: “Mirroring the natural hues of dusk, Classic Blue is reminiscent of a dreamy evening sky, making it the ideal shade for window dressings. Classic Blue is a versatile shade – when applied as the key, block colour at a window it works well as either a sheer blind or one with dim out qualities.

“If it’s pattern you’re after, it looks great in a floral design mixing blue with teal and white.”

Alex Whitecroft, Head of Design at I Want Wallpaper says that the turn of a new decade brings fresh beginnings, making 2020 the prime time to consider refreshing tired walls: “Although it may be considered a bold choice for walls, Classic Blue is surprisingly versatile and can be styled in many ways to achieve different looks.”

Daniel Pendergast, Design Director at The Rug Seller concludes: “Classic Blue complements so many colours – including shades of grey, teal, subtle pinks and off whites, making it the ideal colour to add an instant update to existing colour schemes at home.

“Achieve an interior update in an instant simply by adding a rug to your living space. Classic Blue is elegant and simple, so don’t be afraid of playful patterns. Whether a dramatic geometric, vivid abstract or traditional Lancaster design, consider patterns that spark conversations and bring a sense of energy into your room.”
