As one of the leading menswear retailers in the region, Scruples 1984 is looking forward to a summer filled with colour and style.
The Barrowford store is popping with a palette of vivid brights and subtle pastels, as store manager Tom Orrell explains: “It’s definitely all about pop colours – something that will give an outfit the real wow factor! The variation of colour this season is pretty wild from bright orange, raspberry and yellow to pale pink, pastel blue and variations in neutral tones – beiges and a solid favourite, camel – the choice is amazing! However, one thing’s for sure our customers will definitely find a colour to suit them this summer.”
Accessories can also add a splash of colour to an outfit and Scruples has a wonderful collection of colourful ties from Eton, pocket handkerchiefs and quirky belts by Elliott Rhodes, along with bespoke accessories by silk specialist Italo Ferretti – tie and handkerchief combinations that really elevate the outfit and matching braces too!
Staying on the theme of colour, Tom and founder Stephen Collins, recently welcomed regular customer John Rogerson to the store: “John is a long-standing friend of Stephen and he loves to be dressed to the nines. He always goes down the bespoke route as he likes the fit, plus it really allows him to capture his personality in what he’s wearing – he always looks fantastic!” says Tom.
“Readers can see in this issue of Live Ribble Valley, that John opted for colour with a real pop!”
With his latest made-to-measure jacket, John chose a gorgeous 100 per cent raw cashmere cloth from world-leading Italian brand Loro Piana in a stylish shade of orange: “It was one of the first jackets we did with Loro Piana’s raw cashmere collection – since then the brand has sky-rocketed in store over the last few seasons, particularly made to measure.
“John wanted something that would be really versatile – something he would wear in summer and winter to maximise wearability,” adds Tom.
Made in-house at Scruples, the jacket has a contrasting skull and roses lining in orange and beige: “John is absolutely thrilled with the jacket that can be dressed up or dressed down with jeans. When we make a bespoke jacket our customers also get a bespoke Eton shirt and John chose a white shirt with orange buttons – he was delighted with it!”
Loro Piana’s premium cloths, including their stunning cashmere collection, offer clientele diversity – jackets can be made for warmth in winter and to keep cool in summer: “We are continually extending the collection and there is a huge variation in colours too so our clients have a fabulous choice of options when designing their perfect jacket. They can opt for contrast stitching, buttons and different styles of lapel.”
Leading Italian suiting brand Canali has also remerged at Scruples 1984 as a strong contender in the style stakes with sharp tailoring, stylish footwear and superior shirts: “We have extended the Canali collection as our customers really like it – Canali represents great styling and is a real elevation of our in-store offer.”
Italian giant Pal Zileri have also been re-establishing their position in the casual menswear market with popular one-off pieces like their recent orange bomber: “That was really different,” recalls Tom. “The brand has really got its own identity and we are really looking to grow it. It gives customers a luxury garment at the right price point.”
Sitting alongside bespoke Canali and Pal Zileri, Scruples’ own-brand tailoring label Rupert Totti continues to thrive and is a popular choice for those wanting smart made-to-measure: “We have had some fabulously colourful check jackets – lightweight and unstructured that are perfect for summer.”
Having the likes of wonder-brands such as Loro Piana and Canali on board has meant that Scruples 1984 has attracted the attention of other global names, keen on collaborating with the Barrowford store, as Tom explains: “We have brought in a good number of top-end brands which are bringing in a lot more customers.
“When we bring these worldwide labels in, we’re attracting clientele who have been buying the brand from Harrods for years.”
With summer sun on the horizon, Scruples 1984 have been a trusted Tom Ford stockist for a while now and similarly other leading eyewear brands have followed suit. Scruples have introduced Zegna to their customers and the store is the only independent menswear retailer in the UK to stock DITA eyewear: “The Zegna and Dita brands are massive for us as they’re such big names.
“Dita eyewear is hand-engineered in Japan and the collection is really varied – some are extensively constructed and quite daring, others are much softer in style. It’s a really exciting collection that we are proud to host.”
Bringing global labels to Scruples 1984 has been key to the evolution of this popular menswear store which continues to go from strength to strength with new international collaborations: “It has changed the way we buy and has substantially elevated our collections.”
