Come In, We’re Open
Preston’s historic listed market canopies are undergoing restoration in readiness for the building of a brand new market hall next year
The Fish Market canopy, a 1920’s structure, was fully renovated earlier this year with its stunning restoration completed in May. Work on its neighbour, the Victorian 1875 canopy is also now well underway with the first phase due to be completed by the end of the summer.
This falls nicely in line with Heritage Open Days in September for which Preston Market will be hosting two guided tours – free of charge – specially put together for the event. The tours will focus on the history of the markets in Preston up to the present day showcasing the market canopies, which are widely regarded as engineering marvels and architectural gems.
If you fancy finding out a bit more about this fascinating part of Preston’s history, Heritage Open Day tours are running on Saturday 10 September at 11.30am and 12.30pm. Tours will last approximately 30 minutes and all participants will receive a free drinks voucher redeemable in the markets’ cafés when the tour has finished. More details can be found at www.prestonguildcity.co.uk/hodmarkets.
The subsequent phases of the Markets Quarter project will see the current 1970’s indoor market hall demolished to make way for a state of the art cinema including an experience screen, restaurants and brand new car park, offering an exciting backdrop to the new Preston Market Hall.
Preston Market has also recently launched a weekly Sunday Market under its Fish Market canopy.
Encouraging traders selling vintage, collectables, antiques, food and furniture – as well household items – the market is establishing itself as the go to regular Sunday Market in the area. With an introductory rate of £5 per stall this is a great opportunity for individuals who have items they want to sell. If you are interested in taking a stall at the Sunday Market, please get in touch with email@example.com or just turn up on the day.
