In the beautiful setting of Stydd Gardens is the Wine Shed – and new to this stunning destination is the Wine Shed School of Wine.

The brainchild of Wine Shed owner Nuala Wheeldon, herself a wine expert, the newly refurbished Wine School with its industrial-style décor, sits at the heart of Stydd, which is the perfect location to learn all about wine!

Whether you’re aiming to further your career, a serious connoisseur or simply want to have fun with friends, the Wine School caters for all, with formal classes leading to globally recognised qualifications and informal events that are more relaxed and fun.

FORMAL WINE SCHOOL CLASSES – WSET qualifications

The formal classes at the Wine School are led by qualified wine educator Iain Hargreaves, who will take the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) classes leading on to WSET Levels 1, 2 & 3 – qualifications that are recognised worldwide.

About to embark on WSET Level 4, Iain is an experienced tutor: “For those working or looking to enter the hospitality industry WSET qualifications are expected. For those wanting to simply learn more about wine the formal or informal classes are a great way to become more educated about wine.”

Level 1: Over a single day, wine students will learn about the main types and styles of wine, common wine grapes and their characteristics, how to store and serve wine and the principles of food and wine pairing.

Level 2: This course can either be an intensive three-day experience or evening classes held over a three week period. Level 2 is more in-depth, learning about how wine is made, what factors influence wine style, the key white and black grape varieties and their characteristics, the important wine-producing regions of the world in which these grapes are grown, the production of sparkling wines along with label terminology and the legalities surrounding wine production.

Level 3: This is for individuals seeking to delve deeper into the world of wines, with the Level 3 qualification providing a detailed understanding of grape growing, wine making along with the key factors in the production of wine. Students at the Wine Shed School of Wine will learn how to taste wines, describe their characteristics and evaluate their quality. This qualification, which requires a much higher level of study, enables individuals to proceed as a sommelier in the industry.

INFORMAL WINE SCHOOL CLASSES

These are informative, relaxed events that can be as detailed as you want them to be!

“These are bite-sized classes that groups can specify what they would like – they might want to learn all about Rioja or Champagne – we can tailor the classes to suit their needs,” says Nuala, who has worked in the hospitality industry and who is WSET Level 2 qualified.

“We can show people how to taste wine, how to drawn in air to appreciate the flavours, how to assess it, what it feels like on the palate, all the basics that ensure individuals can get the most from the wine they drink.”

The informal classes at the Wine Shed School of Wine, which are perfect for family celebrations, hen parties and as gifts, can also feature food as Iain explains: “For example if you are learning about Spanish wines, we can include tapas. It is a lovely way to learn about wine from the experts in what is a fabulous setting.”
