Explore The Future
Leading independent school Westholme is set to hold a ground-breaking event for local students, who are eager to explore future career pathways
Westholme School is pioneering a multi-faceted careers evening which will be the first of its kind to incorporate all aspects of life after Sixth Form. It is open to all local school pupils from Year 9 upwards – in particular those that don’t have access to such a prestigious event that will bring together big-hitters from the corporate world along with representatives from top universities and apprenticeship schemes.
Similar to UCAS Discovery events, which are held throughout the country, the Westholme event will provide a northern-based opportunity for students to explore, research and discuss their future aspirations.
Russell Group universities, local academic centres and other leading universities from across the UK will be represented and available for families to hear first-hand about courses, applications and life at their academic institutions.
Representatives from national organisations including the Armed Forces and the NHS as well as local law firms, architects, dentists and veterinary practices, will be in attendance to discuss degree apprenticeships.
Leading figures from the likes of the BBC, Astra Zeneca, Warburtons and Sellafield will be present to discuss careers in engineering, chemistry and HR: “Companies like these have all manner of positions and training opportunities,” explains Head of Westholme’s INSPIRED Sixth Form, Jonathan Oracz.
“There has recently been a big shift in the number of students opting for degree apprenticeships and at Westholme our students have had considerable success in getting placements at leading companies including Jaguar Land Rover, Coca Cola and the BBC.
“Our students have successfully competed against thousands of others to gain these places and this reflects the strength of the career programme that we have here at Westholme.”
The school’s award-winning career programme is far-reaching, with Westholme holding mock interviews as well as encouraging students to attend Sixth Form societies, listen to online lectures and podcasts and use the universal online platform Unifrog.
“Our INSPIRED Sixth Form students are constantly absorbing information and being enriched academically,” adds Mr Oracz.
Successful Westholme alumni will also be returning to the school to take part in the careers event to chat about their own personal career pathways: “Our alumni have offered to give up their time to attend – they are happy to give something back to support the next generation.”
Speaking about the forthcoming event, Principal Mr Paul Taylor adds: “School pupils are fast approaching the most exciting transition of their lives so far, but there are so many different options available these days. The Westholme careers fair will open their eyes to the vast range of opportunities ready for them in the North West and nationally.”
