FIRST NORTHERN RUNNER
Highclere’s Northern racehorse owners are hugely excited about their horses’ prospects after visiting the stables to see them in action on the gallops, writes Jason Fildes
The 2019 flat season started in glorious weather at the famous Lincoln meeting at Doncaster last week. Highclere’s Consultant finished an excellent third of 17 in the last race to the delight of an enthusiastic group of owners. He is such a big horse that he’ll need this run to get him properly fit so we will be waiting in anticipation to see where his trainer, Andrew Balding, sends him next.
It’s likely to be on a galloping track with a long straight as he needs time to get into a rhythm!
Our first runner for the Northern stables will be Showroom’s seasonal debut at Leicester. As I write we have just received the call from the Johnston stable that he’s been declared to run.
If he goes well all roads lead to Newcastle for a big handicap on Good Friday.
It’s a wonderful time of year with all the horses now doing fast work – even the two year olds. A bit of sunshine brings them on beautifully, so the latest mild weather is more than welcome.
I don’t think we will see our Northern two-year-olds in racecourse action till next month but I do know that all our trainers are eyeing races at the May meetings at Chester and York.
All the owners are very excited about the prospects for their horses and I am in touch on a regular basis with updates.
We are also in the middle of plenty of stable visits to see our horses in action on the gallops – it usually ends up with breakfast or lunch with the trainer!
