Full Steam Ahead

It’s clear that there’s something special going on at the Black Bull, which has recently won Pub of the Year Award, writes Tedd Walmsley

Meeting Becky Govier is always a pleasure. Her boundless enthusiasm and positivity are infectious and when we sat down to chat about all things Black Bull, it was clear that exciting things are happening at her much-loved Ribble Valley pub.

With a complete kitchen refit, an exciting new menu and a whole host of fantastic events, it’s full steam ahead for this thriving local favourite. And to top it all off, they’ve just scooped Pub of the Year at the Visit Tourism Awards where they were described as ‘a shining example of what makes Lancashire special’, which is an incredible achievement for Becky and her talented team. You’ll see why as soon as you walk through the door.

There’s something seriously special happening at the Black Bull in Old Langho and if you haven’t been recently, you’re in for a treat. If you’re a regular, you’ll already know what’s cooking, but for those who haven’t popped in for a while, now is the time to head over.

First off, let’s talk about the kitchen. The refit and expansion are more than just a facelift—they’ve really given the chefs the space they need to shine. With top-notch equipment and more room to work their magic, they can now prepare a wider range of dishes. Whether you’re inside enjoying the warm, inviting atmosphere of the pub or outside soaking up some sunshine, you’re guaranteed a meal that’s cooked to perfection. And with warmer weather just around the corner, the outdoor seating area is definitely going to be a popular spot for al fresco dining.

As for the menu, it’s something to get excited about. Head chef Emma and her team are always trying out new things and the specials board is where the magic really happens. Fresh, seasonal produce from local suppliers means the dishes change regularly, so there’s always something new to try. You might pop in for one thing and leave with a completely different dish in mind – but that’s part of the fun! Whether it’s a new twist on a classic pub dish or something a little more experimental, there’s always a surprise awaiting.

And speaking of recognition, that Pub of the Year Award is no fluke. Becky and the team have been working tirelessly to create a pub that’s not just about great food and drink but about building an atmosphere where everyone feels at home. To be recognised at such a high level is a huge achievement.

If you’re after something a little different, then make sure you check out their Steak & Swing nights. If you love a good steak (and who doesn’t), you’ll be in for a treat. They serve up juicy ribeye, fillet and all the trimmings with the talented Phil Halliwell providing a soundtrack of smooth, soulful tunes. It’s the perfect mix of great food and fantastic music and it’s fast becoming one of the highlights of the week.

Look out for the dates at the end of this article and make sure you follow their social media posts.

The Black Bull isn’t just a place to grab a quick bite, it’s the perfect spot for any occasion. From birthdays and anniversaries to just getting the gang together for a catch-up, the Fire Barn offers a cosy, private setting that makes your event feel extra special. With personalised service and bespoke menus, Becky and her team take care of everything to make sure your celebration is one to remember.

Of course, no mention of the Black Bull would be complete without talking about their Sunday roasts. If you’ve ever had one, you’ll know why they’ve become legendary. The star of the show is the spectacular sirloin of beef, which is cooked to perfection. They’re so popular, they serve over 200 covers every Sunday, so it’s definitely a good idea to book ahead!

And just down the road, there’s the sister pub, the Edisford Bridge in Clitheroe, which is another gem in the Ribble Valley. It’s the perfect pit stop for walkers, dog owners or anyone just looking for a proper pint and a hearty meal. As we move into spring and summer, more tourists will be visiting the area, and the Eddy is the perfect spot for a quick bite after a day out exploring. The menu here is full of traditional pub classics and great value too.

The Black Bull isn’t just a place to eat and drink, it’s a place to experience the best of Ribble Valley hospitality. Whether you’re dropping by for a pint, treating yourself to a steak or indulging in that unbeatable Sunday roast, you’ll always be met with a warm welcome and top-quality service. With an ever-changing menu and a whole lot of events to look forward to, it’s no wonder this place is a local favourite.

And for those planning to stay in the area, there’s even more exciting news – work is well underway on the Black Bull’s bespoke boutique B&B across the road, which is set to welcome guests later this year.
