Fun In The Sun

Tourism and Cultural Services Manager at Fylde Borough Council, Tim Dixon, highlights how to spend the summer here on the sunny Fylde coast

Summer at last is here! Check out the outdoor theatre season at Lytham Hall including Romeo and Juliet, Little Women, the Adventures of Dr Dolittle, Woofers – Laughs on the Lawn LOL, not forgetting the Last Night of the Proms taking place on Sunday 25th August.

Over at the Lowther Pavilion and Gardens, there’s the Folk and Roots Festival, Ice Cream Festival, outdoor cinema, plus a great range of music and entertainment all summer long – find out more on their website.

The annual Lytham 1940s Weekend takes place 17th and 18th August on Lytham Green, with a line-up of entertainment, dance, historic vehicles, battle re-enactments, life on the home front and much more. It’s a free event and there’s adjacent event parking on Lytham Green.

Do take time to explore the 78 acres of Lytham Hall’s grounds, which are forever changing through the seasons and the volunteers do such a wonderful job in the grounds and within the hall too.

Under construction at present is a new art gallery, to be known as the Fylde Gallery where you’ll be able to see the Lytham St Annes Art Collection, which is normally to be found at the Town Hall in St Annes. The new gallery will offer the opportunity to see different aspects of this collection with exhibitions held throughout the year, plus other visiting exhibitions. The gallery will remain free to visit, with donations very welcome for reinvestment back into the art collection.

Family fun at the seaside! Have you hired one of the award-winning St Annes beach huts yet? What a wonderful way to spend a day and enjoy fantastic views over the wide-open sandy beach over to Southport. Plus, in St Annes there’s the Little Links golf (under new ownership this year), pétanque court opposite the Grand Hotel, award winning Promenade Gardens, Ashton Gardens and the extensive sand dune network. There’s loads of events too this summer including the St Annes Music Festival, Brass in the Grass and the St Annes Kite Festival (13th – 15th September) to name but a few. Don’t forget Fairhaven Lake with its busy summer schedule of events, motorboat hire, adventure golf, tennis, paddle board hire and more, plus many independent shops in St Annes away from the main shopping street.

And away from the coast there’s the beautiful countryside – watch a game of cricket at Wrea Green, there’s views over Bowland Fells from the Cartford Inn, plus plenty of walking routes with some walking events organised by Fylde Council’s own Ranger Team.
