Growth Through Generations
Of Service & Excellence
Small seeds planted four generations ago have seen a family business grow into what is now a trusted and experienced cornerstone of the Lancashire gardening community, built on a deep-rooted passion for delivering value and customer service, writes Katie Hammond. Photography: Michael Porter
When Joseph Webster took his first foray into ironmongery with son Bill back in 1948, he could never have foreseen that his great grandson would still be honouring the legacy of quality he planted from humble beginnings all those years ago.
With a flourishing business, still very much centred around the values of his great grandfather, David Webster is the current custodian of what is now Mowerpower, evolved from J Webster and Son Ltd, and now celebrating more than 75 years in business.
Suppliers of high quality, reliable maintenance tools for professionals and home gardeners alike, Mowerpower has cultivated a reputation for excellence, specialist maintenance and servicing for loyal customers across Lancashire.
David tells us: “I was always around the business from an early age and loved meeting customers, trying to help out wherever I could. My dad Richard showed me the importance of not just the quality of the machinery and tools we supply, but also backing this up with an ongoing relationship with our customers, so they feel reassured when they buy anything from us. We are always on hand to maintain their machinery as well as demonstrate and advise what will work best for their gardening needs.”
Based between Preston and Lancaster on the A6, Mowerpower is well-placed for customer visits to discuss their individual requirements, which David feels is an intrinsic part of the business’s success.
He continues: “We had to improve our online presence and communication during the pandemic, so there’s lots of information about products, services and maintenance on our website, but our real strength has always been interacting with customers face to face so that we can demonstrate the best products and machinery for their needs. Our experienced and knowledgeable team can talk through everything from purchase to carrying out maintenance and repairs as needed.”
Deeply embedded within the local gardening community and further afield across Lancashire, Mowerpower works hard to maintain its commitment and passion about educating customers to help with both commercial and home cultivated gardens.
Stocking everything from commercial and domestic outdoor heaters to ride-on, battery, robotic and petrol mowers, scarifiers and rotavators, chainsaws and blowers, the 10-strong team also offers machinery hire for the more challenging tasks and reconditioned equipment to suit everyone’s budgets and requirements.
David adds: “Because we have such great and ongoing relationships with generations of our customers, they view us as a trusted partner to guide them through the gardening season and any maintenance which needs to be carried out at different times of the year.
“Dealing with everyone from novices to professional gardeners and first-time machinery buyers to commercial landscapers gives us unrivalled experience and know-how and we stay in touch with them as the year unfolds. For example, at this time of year, people are thinking about Spring and wanting to get out in their gardens despite the colder weather, so our mobile heaters for patio, marquee and workshop use, with high heat output and low running costs, are really popular at the moment with both commercial and domestic customers.
“Everything we sell is backed up with service and parts supply. We also offer a delivery service and on-site demonstrations for larger equipment to ensure the customer gets exactly what they need for the job in hand.”
Looking to the future, and with the next generation already pottering round the business in the form of David’s children Lily and Oliver, aged 4 and 2, Mowerpower remains dedicated to its founding principles of quality, durability and customer satisfaction. With a blend of tradition and innovation, the Webster family continues to inspire gardeners county wide, proving that a family business can thrive and continually evolve, while staying true to its deep and prolific roots.
