HAVE YOUR OWN RIBBLE VALLEY ADVENTURE

Explore the region on foot, by cycle or by car, and you will discover two of the Valley’s most welcoming rural inns offering beautiful interiors and delicious food set amidst breath-taking countryside

Perfectly located in beautiful countryside are two rural inns that represent the very best in picturesque country dining and interesting walking trails.

The Waddington Arms in the pretty village of Waddington and the Shireburn Arms in Hurst Green are both ideal for exploring the Ribble and Hodder Valleys on foot, on a cycle ride or by car – but whatever form of transport you choose, both pubs are a perfect home from home.

Rural elegance and delicious food lie at the heart of these two destinations which are part of the James’ Places stable that has forged a reputation for relaxed dining in some of the most beautiful locations in the region.

Originally a 17th Century inn set in the picturesque village of Hurst Green, the Shireburn Arms is a country pub that is perfect for any occasion whether that’s meeting for informal morning coffee before setting off on one of the many walks in the area, a relaxed lunch and a pint or an evening meal – all visitors can be assured of a warm welcome.

The Shireburn is perfectly located for an adventure over the top of Longridge Fell or Kemple End where you can expect breath-taking views over the Ribble Valley to the south or the Forest of Bowland to the north.

A little less challenging is the renowned Tolkien Trail – the Shireburn Arms’ proximity to the confluence of the rivers Ribble and Hodder means there are some enchanting river walks only a stones’ throw away as well as tranquil leafy trails that lead out of Hurst Green.

The five-and-a-half-mile Tolkien Trail meanders along the banks of both rivers before returning to the village via the historic Stonyhurst College, where the renowned author spent many months. It is believed that the rolling green fields and fells around Hurst Green inspired Tolkien’s vision of the Shire in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

After a bracing day in the fresh valley air, walkers can refuel, relax and rehydrate in one of the Shireburn’s comfortable tweed armchairs by the fire or, weather permitting, relax outside on the terrace with fabulous views over the valley and across to Pendle Hill.

And if you want to linger a little longer the Shireburn has a number of delightful country-style bedrooms where walkers and visitors to the Ribble Valley can relax and enjoy all that the area has to offer!

Just a few miles away in the award-winning village of Waddington, the Waddington Arms is located next to the babbling brook that runs through this picture postcard village.

The Waddington Arms lies at the hub of this vibrant community and presents the perfect base for walking, cycling – either gentle or challenging – as well being perfectly located for the town of Clitheroe.

There are many and varied riverside walks or challenging hikes up into the fells and, like the Shireburn, the Waddington Arms offers a warm welcome with its crackling log fires, flag floors and rural interiors. And when the sun is shining there are tables to the front of the pub and a beer garden that benefits from dappled shade from a beautiful old oak tree.

Fabulous food is also on offer – the James’ Places eateries are renowned for using excellent local produce and artisan suppliers. The Waddington Arms serves lunch and dinner throughout the week and with six beautifully presented bedrooms, visitors will be tempted to stay a while and explore and experience their very own adventure in the Ribble Valley!

For a relaxed break, a destination dining experience or a romantic getaway, both the Waddington Arms and the Shireburn Arms are equally impressive in their elegant presentation and perfect location!
