HOW TO BE A HERO

Tedd Walmsley a trustee of Blackburn charity Nightsafe explains how you too can support this worthy cause

It’s been nearly 12 months since I accepted the role of trustee at Nightsafe – the Blackburn based local charity established in 1990 to meet the growing needs of homeless young people aged 18 to 24. The number continues to grow and often their needs are complex requiring specialist help and support to get them get back on their feet again.

We have had a successful year of fundraising but from 1st April 2018 we start all over again on our climb up the same ‘big hill’ to raise £50k – money made up through a combination of generous donations, both corporately and individually, alongside a host of fund raising events spanning the year. The generosity shown by so many people has at times been completely overwhelming and this has inspired me to create a title for those wonderful individuals and businesses – namely our Nightsafe Heroes.

My question is, can you help me this year and become a Nightsafe Hero? I’ve listed below some of the many ways you can help – it’s by no means exhaustive and we have no monopoly on good ideas for fund raising:

ONGOING NEEDS
• Fresh produce and cheese
• Tinned foods
• Washing powder
• Toiletries
• Warm clothes and bedding and towels

CORPORATE FUNDRAISING
• Corporate cash donations
• Could you ‘adopt’ our charity and donate proceeds of your events to us?
• Can you get your staff involved?
• Have you a product you could donate or connect us to suppliers, who may be able to help?
• Donate raffle and auction prizes

FUNDRAISING THROUGH EDUCATION
Calling all schools and colleges – please galvanize your students to donate unwanted clothes and toiletries or create events to increase awareness of our homeless young people.

INDIVIDUALLY
Donations big and small of any of the items above are invaluable or perhaps you could volunteer some time to help and support our various projects?
If any of you feel you can get involved, please do not hesitate to get in touch initially with me by email or contact the dedicated team at Nightsafe. Thank you in advance for your kindness and becoming one of a growing number of Nightsafe Heroes. Kindness really does matter.
