King And Queen Of Colour

Amanda Killelea talks to the leaders of the professional colour team at Freddie’s

Between them Matt Threlfall and Beth Dickinson have almost 40 years of hair colour experience at the highest level between them.

The creative pair lead the professional colour team at Lancashire’s premier hair salon, Freddie’s in Rossendale.

And salon owner Freddie Cunliffe believes their unparalleled experience makes them the county’s king and queen of colour.

Freddie explains: “Beth was just 17 when she completed the Schwarzkopf Colour Masterclass – which is the equivalent of a degree in colour – making her the youngest ever person to qualify.

“Her knowledge of the science and technology in colouring is second to none. Beth is never afraid to push the boundaries of colour which other salons might be wary of trying.

“Matt has the vision and creative flair, as well as 21 years of experience. The two of them complement each other perfectly meaning their joint knowledge and talent help us to give our clients exactly what they want and take their colour to the next level.”

Matt and Beth constantly strive to improve and learn, making sure they are always at the forefront of the latest hairdressing trends and technology.

Beth specialises in blonde looks and says: “I am not afraid to try anything, but I will always be honest with a client if they bring a picture in – it may take more than one or two sessions in the salon chair to achieve the look they want but we will do our best to get them there whilst maintaining the condition of their hair.”

Matt explains: “This year I think we will see a move away from the balayage grown-out colour look and a return to more traditional highlights and highlights that frame the face.

“We like to think that no challenge is ever too big for us – if a client has had a hair disaster at home or at another salon, we are happy to correct it.”

Matt’s talents have been recognised by the hairdressing industry as he was part of the Schwarzkopf Young Artistic Team and won their Creative Colour Award for three consecutive years.

He also takes to the stage to deliver seminars and training classes to other hairdressers across the country.

But despite the undoubted talent and success of his team, Freddie prides himself on creating a professional yet down-to-earth atmosphere in the salon.

And it is a real family affair too – Matt is Freddie’s husband and Beth is his niece. Supporting them on the salon floor are Hayley Miller, who has been part of the Freddie’s family for 29 years, Jade Rothwell, who has 20 years’ service and Nick Wright with 14 years.

Freddie says: “Of course we want our clients to get the luxury, professional experience they expect. But we also want them to feel welcome, comfortable and part of the Freddie’s family.

“It is our 30th anniversary next year and some clients who came to us on our very first day are still with us now. I think that speaks volumes about the talent and dedication of my entire team, who always strive to be the best.”
