Kitchen Kudos

This Memphis-inspired floor and the Matisse-inspired splashback have all been hand painted in world renowned Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan

Dine out on the art-cool kudos of hand-painted decorative kitchen tiles and colour-pop cabinets with Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan.

“You can paint your tiles for a fraction of the cost of shop-bought. The only skills you need are patience, imagination and forward planning, while painting cabinets requires no skill at all,” explains Annie.

Whether you’re purchasing plain tiles to transform before laying, or painting over existing, there are a multitude of ways to add character using Chalk Paint™.

“With unlaid tiles, the world is your oyster. If you’re painting laid tiles in a kitchen you use daily, focus on wall tiles and splashbacks rather than floors, to allow for drying time. Cabinets are more forgiving, as they require less drying time than tiles and of course, you won’t be walking on them!” adds Annie.

If you’re a confident painter, go freehand with a detail brush. For the enthusiastic but less experienced, stencils or rubber stamps are impactful and effective.

“In this kitchen, we used the same white tiles on both the splashback and floor. We contrasted block colour painted tiles with Matisse-inspired flowers and leaves, framed in black to echo the Memphis-inspired floor.

“The floor tiles were covered in masking tape, with only a strip left exposed, which we painted black. When dry, we positioned on the floor in alternate directions for a simple yet graphic look.”

As tiles are non-porous, Chalk Paint™ requires a longer drying and curing window than usual, so leave plenty of time between coats and finishing, protecting with Chalk Paint™ Lacquer. On flooring, a minimum of two coats of lacquer is recommended. The full curing period for lacquer is 14 days, so take care not to scratch or chip during this time.

Splashback tiles: Burgundy, Scandinavian Pink, Napoleonic Blue and Athenian Black from £5.95
Floor tiles and table: Athenian Black Wall: Chalk Paint™ in Greek Blue, Athenian and Old White
Chair: Napoleonic Blue
Chalk Paint™ Lacquer £21.95
