La Mia Mamma

Phil Keenan takes a look at how La Festa della Mamma is celebrated in Italy

Taking place on Sunday 15th March here in the UK, Mother’s Day or La Festa della Mamma, as they know it in Italy, is a wonderful day for celebration! For Italian men, particularly, ‘la mamma’ is probably the most important figure in their lives and, around the world, they’re regularly referred to as ‘mammoni’ (mummy’s boys).

It’s well known that all important Italian celebrations revolve around food and eating, and the classic Italian mamma is often the one who owns the kitchen, frequently spending hours and hours preparing and cooking family meals. For Italian children, mum is generally the glue that bonds the family together and her food is like a comforting blanket, with the tastes and smells staying with them for the rest of their lives.

Of course, this isn’t just an Italian thing, mum is generally the central figure of family life here too and what better way to recognise this than by treating her to a delicious, Mother’s Day celebration at La Locanda. You’ll find the menu on their website (lalocanda.co.uk) and early booking is highly recommended!

The language (and the food) of Love
Another well recognised celebration in the UK, San Valentino and Valentine’s Day, dates back to third century Italy and few places in the world can rival it when it comes to romance. Take the language, for instance, it doesn’t really matter what an Italian says, it always sounds so musical and as if the words are taken from the most carefully composed romantic sonnet. The same goes for the food. Italians most certainly equate food with love and it’s no surprise, therefore, that they always put their heart and soul into creating it. No wonder Italian food is seen as the number one choice on Valentine’s Day and this is certain to be the case when it comes to La Locanda’s seductive, six-course San Valentino menu. So, make your reservation today!
