Make Flooring Fun

Why should walls have all the fun? Alternative Flooring believe life is too short to live in dull spaces and flooring should be allowed to have some fun too

As daring originators, it has collaborated with some of the best-loved names in the interior world from designers and weavers to a leading fabric house to create more contemporary, quirky and playful patterns for your floors. From dots to diamonds, hearts to animal skins, you can find the perfect narrow width floor runner for your home.

At the recent Focus/19 London Design Festival Alternative Flooring launched its Stair Art collection of patterned wool runners. This is textile floor art with a series of runners by British designers in British wool and expertly woven by Alternative Flooring on Axminster looms in Wilton, bringing together traditional techniques and contemporary design.

Taking part in this great British craft are Ella Doran, Margo Selby and Divine Savages with archive carpet designs by Lucienne Day, one of Britain’s most influential and best-loved 20th century designers.

Alternative’s Stair Art comprises eight patterns in a total of 17 colourways:

Waterlake and Camo by Ella Doran
Waterlake is inspired by the flow of water on the estate at Yorkshire Sculpture Park while Camo by the bark of Plane trees of London Fields, Ella’s local park.

Deco by Divine Savages
Deco is taken from Divine Savages Deco Martini design which draws inspiration from the roaring 20s and the decadent tastemakers of the jazz age.

Patch and Fair Isle by Margo Selby
Patch and Fair Isle are vibrant graphic patterns inspired by hand-woven textiles developed by Margo Selby on her loom and recreated and blown up to make stair art.

Octagon plus Squares and Diamonds by Lucienne Day
Two Lucienne Day designs from the 1960s, Octagon plus Squares and Diamonds in original vibrant colourways.

Stars by Alternative Flooring stars
Fun and playful, the bold design of the Quirky Stars Red Sky patterned carpet will work not only in bedrooms but also in the hall, landing and of course on the stairs.

Tribe by Alternative Flooring tribal
The Quirky Tribe Axminster carpet runner is bold, full of pattern and interest. It will add vibrancy and art to often forgotten areas of the home including the stairs.

So, why not let your imagination run wild and add instant character and vitality to your home? You can go stripey, designer, rocky, demure or even mix and match your Stair Art if you’re feeling very daring.

We have the full Stair Art collection in our showroom for you to have a look at and even try out at home so you can see just how easily it can bring your home to life.
