Therapeutic coach Lynn Scholes advises on the one and only resolution you need to make this New Year

At this time our thoughts turn to the New Year and how we can make it the best it can possibly be. Resolutions start to formulate and we start to make that list. A significant number will resolve to join the gym and get fit, which I wholeheartedly support.

Each year thousands of people take out new gym memberships but only 33 per cent ever attend regularly after two months.

Lack of motivation and time is cited, however, if this is important enough to make the resolution list, it doesn’t make sense.

From my experience in therapeutic coaching there will be some emotional challenge that you have, that isn’t being addressed and is holding you back and getting in the way of your dreams, aspirations and resolutions. It may be something current or something from the past.

Others often can’t see we are suffering or grappling with emotional challenges, stress or anxiety. We may not want to admit it to ourselves, or worse still, we may believe it cannot be resolved.

If you have never been told about the success that people have in dealing with these things through a unique combination of coaching and counselling, you may not be aware what is possible.

What you need to know, is it isn’t my skills or my having access to a magic wand that enables clients to make huge progress with their emotional health. It is the decision they take for themselves to get the help and support needed to live a happy and fulfilled life.

In the case of one client, for four years prior to our first session she had never been to the supermarket or walked down the street alone – she felt utter panic at the thought of it. In her words she was existing not living.

Today she has a full social life, regularly does the family shop and doesn’t think twice about going for a walk. Why? Because she committed to herself and her future happiness. She took the step to face her demons and accept and file away things that had been challenging in her past. She learnt to understand and make peace with the past and not let it destroy her today and tomorrow.

The great news is that the top of her list of resolutions for 2022 is ‘join the gym and get fit’. I have every confidence that she will do just that.

All I do in this article is to shine a light on the often hidden cause of why, even joining a gym and getting fit, may not be quite enough.
