MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATIONS
Ways to celebrate Mother’s Day differ across the world. But all have one thing in common – we all want to show our mum how much we appreciate her!
Celebrations of motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses. It became an official US holiday in 1914 and is still heavily celebrated today as a chance for children to show appreciation for the hard work of their doting mums. Traditionally children in Europe and America often celebrate in the same way through giving flowers and cards to say thanks for being mum.
However, customs can differ across the globe. In Thailand for example, they choose to celebrate in August to fall in line with the birthday of their queen, differing to the traditional English celebration holding it on the fourth Sunday in the Christian calendar of Lent.
Mother figures take precedence on this special day that also give us the chance to celebrate grandmothers, great-grandmothers, step-mums and everything in between!
