New Year, New You

So here we are again, the start of a new year and most of us have plans to make changes, writes Tracy Hargreaves

The phrase new year, new you, can cover a multitude of things. But what are the main points that people think about? Start the year off right with small, manageable changes to your lifestyle.

Getting fit is probably number one. After we’ve indulged over the festive period, we all want to get back into shape.

But instead of rushing to sign up to a gym membership that you might not use for the rest of the year, think about what you enjoy doing and consider that instead. It might be joining a walking club, trying a new sport, dance classes or learning more about nutrition so you can cook homemade healthy meals, to help you lose those extra pounds.

Number two is having a finance overhaul and at some point in our lives we will all have money worries causing us stress. It’s a good time to look at what goes out and what comes in. Review your salary, savings and your bills and look for opportunities where you can save the pennies. As the saying goes, every little helps and you will feel more in control of your finances just by making small changes.

Number three. Move house, expand or redecorate? As all three are expensive options, it’s always a tough decision, but think about your lifestyle and what you want and need and do your research. If you’re happy in the area you live, it might be cheaper to add an extension to your current home, rather than buy a new property. However, you can get some good deals on houses on new developments.

Number four. New job. The Christmas holidays can be a time to reflect on a lot of things, especially when spending time with the family and January is a key time to look at where we work. We all want that dream job, but not many of us have it. Think about what it is you really want to do for a living and is it achievable?

You might decide that you want a complete change of career, but need to undertake the relevant training to get it. Alternatively take yourself out of your comfort zone and shadow someone in a different department so you can build up new skills and experience. This will also help towards promotion.

So, by all means make a New Year’s resolution. But make sure it’s one that will really make a difference, so you can enjoy a healthy and prosperous 2018.
