ON COURSE…

‘Golf is a good walk spoiled,’ said Mark Twain, but Tedd Walmsley disagrees as he looks at the feast of golfing opportunities here on your doorstep

Firstly let me add the warmest of welcomes to fellow golfers, who find themselves visiting the beautiful Ribble Valley. Luckily for you we have great courses to challenge every level of ability combined with stunning scenery and the friendliest of natives.

Clitheroe Golf Club – perhaps this would have to be the jewel in the crown. Situated five minutes south of the market town, the club is steeped in history and was designed back in 1937 by James Braid – 6,521 magnificent yards await you. With a delightful signature par three 17th hole, accurate driving and stunning greens will test your game to the full.

Wilpshire Golf Club – relatively short by modern standards with its trademark five par three holes. The combination of parkland and woodland with deep rough and even the odd water hazard make it a good test. Great views and a balcony to have a post game drink and watch the approach shots to the 18th hole.

Longridge Golf Club – just 10 minutes from junction 31a of the M6 and around 20 minutes from Clitheroe, you will find one of the area’s oldest clubs. Its very tricky greens will test even the best putting stroke and the club prides itself on the friendliest staff and welcome around.

Pleasington Golf Club – is regarded as one of the North West’s premier inland courses. It has hosted many prestigious events and is set in 142 acres of stunning countryside. The staff and members will offer you the warmest of welcomes. A proper test of golf and a great option on your visit to the Ribble Valley.

Whalley Golf Club – set against a magnificent backdrop of hills this nine-hole course has plenty of maturity, water hazards and testing greens. Its lovely old club house dates back to 1751 and has been painstakingly restored. Good catering, a decent pro shop and super balcony.

Stonyhurst Park Golf Club – perhaps the Ribble Valley’s hidden gem and well worth a visit. Situated close to Stonyhurst College, the club itself is relatively new, but the history of the course can be traced back to the 19th century. Picturesque views and tranquil surroundings make this a perfect setting for golf. Check the club’s website as fees have to be paid at local pubs.
