OUTDOOR LIVING

Enjoy your garden this spring for a perfect outdoor experience

Over the past few years spring has come early, catching us unprepared for outdoor living. Don’t be caught out this year – take heed of our gardening tips and get your outdoor living space ready for the spring and summer ahead.

Tidy up you garden, whether it’s a lawned area, terrace, decking, vegetable patch or flower beds – or a combination of them all.

In the garden, March is the month when we should consider ordering plug plants and prune roses to encourage strong new growth. Keep an eye out for slugs as the weather warms up as they will start to head for the hostas as their new leaves begin to sprout and unfurl.

In the vegetable patch you can sow peas, carrots, beetroot, summer and autumn cabbages, herbs, leeks, spinach, turnips, spring onions, broad beans, Brussels sprouts and parsnips. This is also a good time to start planting out early potatoes, onions, garlic and shallots.

You can start sowing lettuces, tomatoes, salads and cauliflowers under cover.

If you have a patio or terrace area, and the weather is warm enough now’s the time to smarten up outdoor furniture so you can enjoy the sunshine. And, even if there’s still a chill in the air there are other ways to keep warm with a stylish outdoor wood burner.

You can opt for a traditional cast iron or clay chiminea or alternatively you could choose a super stylish contemporary glass encased ‘cube’ wood burner – the perfect way to impress your guests!

And what better way to herald the start of the warmer weather than with a barbecue! There are lots of different styles of barbecues, from charcoal to gas, from small portable ones for a country picnic to larger state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen-style grills.

Whichever you choose, be sure to source some local produce to enjoy with your barbecue for the perfect outdoor experience.
