The Ribble Valley is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, charming villages and rich history. But, what many people don’t realise is that it also lies in close proximity to some fantastic horse racing venues.

Within a 50-mile radius of this scenic gem, a world of thrilling horse racing action awaits, especially during the festive season. With the crisp winter air and the buzz of Christmas, horse racing during this period takes on a magical, almost enchanting quality. Let’s take a little jaunt through the nearby racing hotspots, perfect for soaking up festive cheer and witnessing some thrilling equestrian action.

HAYDOCK PARK: TOP TIER
If you’re after a top-tier racing experience over Christmas, Haydock Park should be your first stop. Just under 40 miles from the Ribble Valley, this prestigious racecourse boasts some of the most exciting National Hunt racing in the UK, and when Christmas comes around, the excitement levels reach an all-time high.

Picture this – you’re bundled up in your cosiest winter attire, sipping mulled wine while the thundering of hooves cuts through the chilly December air.

One of the standout events at Haydock during this time is the Tommy Whittle Chase, a thrilling race that attracts some of the finest horses and jockeys in the business. The atmosphere is electric, with Christmas carols in the background and festive treats wafting through the air. For many racing enthusiasts, it’s the perfect way to embrace the festive spirit while enjoying a flutter on the horses.

And it’s not just about the races as the whole experience is designed to make your day at Haydock a memorable one, with festive decorations, themed food and drink and even appearances by Father Christmas. Whether you’re a seasoned punter or just looking for a fun day out, Haydock Park during the festive season is pure magic. Look out for Christmas Afternoon Jump Racing on 4th December, the Betfred Tommy Whittle Chase Day on 21st December and the Betfred Last Fling Race Meeting on 30th December.

AINTREE: BOXING DAY
When it comes to horse racing, Aintree needs no introduction. Best known for hosting the Grand National, it’s one of the most iconic racecourses in the world. Located just about 50 miles from the Ribble Valley, Aintree is a must-visit for any horse racing fan, and this year will see their first ever Boxing Day event.

The course offers something for everyone. For the serious racing fan, there are competitive handicaps and chases to get stuck into, while for those just there for a good time, the festive atmosphere is unbeatable. And after a Christmas Day spent overindulging on turkey and mince pies, what better way to shake off the cobwebs than a day at the races?

CARLISLE: FESTIVE FAVOURITE
Venturing a little north of the Ribble Valley brings you to Carlisle Racecourse, another gem for horse racing enthusiasts. Just over 45 miles away, Carlisle is the place to be if you fancy a festive race day in a more intimate setting. Known for its friendly, relaxed atmosphere, Carlisle offers a brilliant day out for families and racing aficionados alike.

One of the highlights of the Christmas racing calendar at Carlisle is the Christmas Jumpers Race Day on 15th December. Yes, you heard that right! A day dedicated to donning your finest festive knitwear while enjoying some thrilling racing action. There’s a real sense of camaraderie, with everyone getting into the Christmas spirit – think mulled wine, mince pies and plenty of festive cheer.

Carlisle also prides itself on having a fantastic variety of hospitality options, so if you’re in the mood to spoil yourself, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a delicious meal while taking in the races. Whether you’re cheering from the stands or watching from the comfort of a cosy box, Carlisle’s festive racing events are bound to leave you with a smile on your face.

CATTERICK BRIDGE: A CRACKER
Over in North Yorkshire, around 45 miles from the Ribble Valley, lies the charming Catterick Bridge Racecourse. A smaller and more traditional course, it offers a down-to-earth, family-friendly racing experience that is perfect for the season. Catterick may not have the grand scale of some of its larger counterparts, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in heart and spirit.

The Christmas Cracker Raceday at Catterick is a firm favourite for those looking to enjoy a relaxed yet fun-filled day. The festive atmosphere is infectious, with plenty of Christmas-themed activities and entertainment. And let’s not forget the racing! With competitive National Hunt races on the card, there’s plenty of excitement to be had.

Catterick is also a great place to introduce younger family members to the joys of horse racing, with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty to keep them entertained. So, if you’re after a traditional, no-frills day at the races, Catterick Bridge is a real treat with Christmas at Catterick on 17th December and Christmas Jumper Afternoon Race Day on 28th December.

So, there you have it! The Ribble Valley may be known for its rolling hills and serene countryside, but it’s also the perfect base for exploring some fantastic festive horse racing further afield.
