Based in the picturesque market town of Garstang, Towers + Gornall has increased its team with 10 new employees within the last year alone. Furthermore, it has developed a wealth of services to ensure new and existing clients receive the best possible advice when it comes to their accountancy and taxation affairs.

“We are a very approachable and friendly company,” says Mick Gornall director at Towers + Gornall.

“We ensure that we work alongside businesses, from start-ups to well established companies to deliver reliable business support and peace of mind. Being proactive is at the core of our values and that’s why we have dedicated time to hiring the right people to carry out the high level of service that we have been delivering for the last 60 years.”

One of the newest additions is Kevin Taylor, who heads up the tax department. Kevin joined the practice in April, having previously worked at local firms in the Lancaster and Preston areas. He has brought an array of new skills to the tax department and is a true expert in this area whilst being able to explain all aspects of tax in a clear way.

“I am really enjoying working with such a friendly team in beautiful Garstang and I am already doing all I can to provide the best service when it comes to tax implications for businesses, no matter how big or small,” says Kevin.

“A new service I have introduced is holding a monthly tax clinic on the second Thursday of every month. It’s completely free of charge where people can book a half hour slot and come along to ask me anything about tax.”

Paying the right amount of tax is determined by personal and business circumstances, since it affects everyone differently. However, with the correct tax planning, liabilities can often be mitigated.

“Most businesses want to grow, pay less tax and become more profitable,” says Kevin. “This can be achieved through careful tax planning and we’re happy to hold a free consultation to get the ball rolling whether it’s to do with inheritance tax, business planning, income tax or capital gains tax.”

Working alongside Kevin is Mandy Williams. As a senior client manager, Mandy is responsible for managing her own portfolio of clients and is currently trying to raise awareness about the arrival of HMRC’s latest initiative, Making Tax Digital (MTD).

“As of 1st April 2019, every individual or business that has a turnover above the VAT threshold will be expected to deliver their VAT returns on some form of digital platform. This is quite a daunting thought for some, so we are holding training sessions and demonstrations of appropriate software for our clients so they can be helped to make the transition as smoothly as possible.”

“As the software is cloud based, we will also have access to their accounts on a real time basis so that we can ensure that everything has been recorded correctly and our clients are supported every step of the way. This change will be here before we know it so it’s essential businesses are ready.”

HMRC’s ambition is to become one of the most digitally advanced tax administrations in the world, modernising the tax system to make it more effective, more efficient and easier for clients to comply.

“Unfortunately, not all clients are as technologically savvy as they are sometimes expected to be by the authorities, and this is one area where we can make a big difference,” says Mick.

Providing services ranging from payroll and auto enrolment to detailed inheritance tax planning, Towers + Gornall is a one stop shop when it comes to accountancy and taxation.

“We work with all types of clients, from many different backgrounds. We have huge amounts of experience in the agricultural sector and a flourishing new business start-up department. When it comes to tax and business advice, it’s important to feel confident in the decisions that you make, so no matter what the query, we’re always happy to help,” concludes Mick.
