Staircases That Make A Statement
In most UK homes, when you walk through the front door, you’re greeted with the staircase and it’s a great way to make an interior design statement, writes Emma Brereton
Bespoke joiners of Preston, Smithy Joinery is a specialist staircase manufacturer and bespoke joinery company. It has been providing services across the north west from prominent individuals, local authorities and conservation projects for almost 20 years.
“We are primarily joinery manufacturers for windows, bays and bows,” says Andy owner at Smithy Joinery. “But the staircases we create, both modern and traditional, can transform an entire home.”
Founded in 2002, the workshop was originally a blacksmiths shop that serviced Bartle Hall in the early 1900s. Historically referred to as Smithy, when Andy opened the business he wanted to keep the history and name it after the old workshop.

As practical as they are impressive, some of the staircases created by Smithy Joinery have been built using the existing stairway. Spindles are replaced with glass and banisters are encased with new wood, you’d never know that the old suite is hiding underneath.
“Working on new build homes is always an exciting opportunity,” adds Andy. “Building a staircase in an open hallway really ensures it’s centre stage and that’s why design is very important. I work closely with every customer to interpret what they have in mind and to successfully execute the desired staircase.”
Frosted glass, downlighters, even incorporating metalwork is a possibility when it comes to designing a staircase. Making a statement as big as this opens up a hall area to host other interior statement pieces such as a chandelier.
Andy’s talents do not end with staircases, he is renowned for his skill at creating traditional sash windows, complete with ropes and pulleys – something that would look fantastic in any period home.
He concludes: “Sash windows, timber windows made to measure, entrance doors, gothic and curved frames, you name it we can build it.
