Step Up To Style

Refurbishing your staircase can bring fresh appeal to your home. Stephanie Sparrow reports

What do visitors see when they walk through your front door? A tired-looking staircase which is troublesome to paint and maintain, or a stylish staircase which enhances the hallway and the rest of the house?

Thanks to the bespoke refurbishment service offered by Andy Fountain and his small team of experienced craftsmen at Smithy Joinery, a new-look staircase is within reach.

“Refurbishing a staircase can be quicker, cleaner and cause less disruption to the family than installing an entirely new staircase,” says Andy.

“We call it a refurbishment because the existing staircase with strings, treads and risers remains in place and we don’t need to touch the carpet fitted onto the treads and risers.”

So how does Smithy Joinery bring a whole new look to your home?

“We fit new newel posts (the uprights at the bottom and top of the stairs) by encasing the existing posts in your chosen wood, and replace handrails and the base rails at the bottom. You could then have new spindles, perhaps one of the thicker or squarer styles, but a lot of customers are replacing them with glass panels instead. They like the way the toughened 10mm safety glass makes the balustrade look more open, and lighter, giving a more modern feel,” he says.

Each job is a bespoke design tailored to suit the client and their home. Every aspect, from measurement and design, to manufacture and installation, is completed by Andy and his craftsmen, which ensures continuity and peace of mind, at the workshop he founded in 2002 in rural Salwick near Preston.

Perhaps you want to extend your design statement with a new staircase instead?

Andy, who has over 30 years’ experience in joinery, can advise and install.

“Whether you prefer sweeping traditional stairs, or ultra-modern open-tread staircases with frameless glass balustrades and LED lighting, they can be supplied in a range of colours, finishes and in a choice of different timbers from light oak to dark walnut. Smithy Joinery has the expertise to deliver,” he says.

As well as refurbishing and building new staircases, Smithy Joinery also manufactures and installs bespoke timber fittings such as sash windows, bays and bows, doors including bi-folding and sliding patio doors and curved frames.

“Whether you are looking for inspiration for home improvement, or a corporate customer looking for a competitive quote, Smithy Joinery can help,” says Andy.
