STUDENTS INSPIRED BY TOP ECONOMIST

The Chief Economist of the Bank of England, named by TIME magazine as one of the most influential people in the world, was the guest speaker at St Mary’s College last month

With a diverse range of educational trips and inspirational speakers, it is no surprise that Business and Economics students at St Mary’s College are seeing impressive progression and achieving outstanding results.

Recently the college welcomed Andy Haldane the Chief Economist at the Bank of England who spoke to 150 students on the impact of economics on everyday life. Haldane, who was named by TIME magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, outlined the impact of economic data on our daily lives giving students a better understanding of how the economy works and the role of the Bank of England.

Economics student William Kerry, commented: “It has inspired me to study Economics further. I wasn’t fully aware of the impact it can have on so many people’s lives.”

Excellent teaching and a far-reaching enrichment programme at St Mary’s College has resulted in 100 per cent pass rate for A level Business and Economics students, who thrive in an environment that encourages and educates.

Former student Chris Olive gained an A* in Business Studies and has gone on to study Business Management at Lancaster University. He said: “St Mary’s College is a small college with a great community atmosphere. The guidance I received has been instrumental in my progression to university.”

Lucy Wright, who gained A* in Economics went on to study at St Andrew’s University: “St Mary’s has a warm and friendly atmosphere, which makes it a great place to study.”

Also gaining an A* in Economics is Tom Boys, who is now studying Business and Economics at Queen’s University Belfast, a course that includes a year-long placement which he has secured at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which will see him working as an economic analyst in Whitehall.

“The strong knowledge of Economics that I developed at St Mary’s College has helped me massively in my first year of university, allowing me to achieve a First. My Economics degree has been applied to real world scenarios which engages me as a student much more than a usual theory-heavy based degree.”

Also this month, as part of the college’s enrichment programme, students embarked on a trip to Jaguar Land Rover and Liverpool One shopping centre – both trips giving them a better understanding of business and the economy.

The trip to Jaguar Land Rover linked with their Business Environment studies while the Liverpool One excursion saw students carrying out market research as well as learning about how the shopping centre operates and how it brings in tourism and money to the city, which promotes further development.
