The huge leaps in digital dentistry have been so significant that you can have your teeth straightened quickly and invisibly and see the results before treatment has even started!
Using Invisalign, which employs the latest, integrated ‘3D computer modelling’ software in conjunction with a custom-manufactured clear aligner system, senior cosmetic dentist Dr Usman Riaz of Renovo Dental, is able to outline a digital treatment plan for patients based on a sophisticated 3D image of their teeth.
From a computerised model of the patient’s mouth, Usman uses the latest digital planning technology to design each clear aligner stage, which is then sent for manufacture.
“This has the huge advantage that the fine movements required to achieve perfect alignment, are applied to the teeth from the very start of the treatment. It saves many months of return visits and also allows patients to see an accurate picture of how their teeth are going to move and how they will eventually look,” explains Usman.
Invisalign aligners are completely transparent and custom-made to predictably straighten teeth without using any metal or wire brackets. Advances in digital orthodontic technology has meant that this accelerated aligner system is taking up to 60 per cent off the normal treatment time.
Following Renovo Dental’s protocols to create space to avoid any extractions, the typical adult completion period for aligner therapy at Renovo Dental is just nine months.
“Invisalign has a really different response time when compared to the classic train track braces and our patients get a real buzz when they realise how effective and simple it is – it can accomplish almost anything that the traditional orthodontic bracket and wires can accomplish.
“Obviously, Invisalign is a compliance-based product, so this is not an issue for our patients as their commitment to wearing the aligners is always great!

The ‘Zoom effect’ has also had a huge impact on demand as Usman explains: “We are using technologies to communicate with each other more than we ever have.
“Many people have continued video conferencing and conducting meetings via Zoom and Facetime chats with family and friends have also continued. We have become accustomed to this way of communicating. So, we are spending even more time looking at ourselves. A huge number of clients mention they had never really realised how noticeable and unsightly certain aspects of their smiles were until they saw the flaws up-close on a daily basis.
“We get many people from referral and recommendation – we treat one member of a family and the results are so impressive other members of the family, and their friends, often follow.”
Usman adds: “The 3D imaging allows micro-rotations for an improved, but still natural look. The teeth don’t have to be absolutely aligned. For example, in the United States, they want teeth that are symmetrical, characterless and artificial.
