AUTUMN GARDENING JOBS
As we head for autumn, John Foley of Holden Clough shares his gardening tips:
September is usually a slightly cooler, gustier month and as the days become noticeably shorter, there will be plenty of jobs to do in the garden to prepare it for autumn and winter. If you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you’ll most likely be reaping the rewards at this time of year.
It’s also time to get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year – come along to Holden Clough where you can pick your own. September in the garden is also the time to enjoy the last of the sunshine!
• Pick autumn raspberries and other fruit you may have
• Weed and seed lawns
• Plant spring flowering bulbs
• Divide herbaceous perennials
• Collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals
• Dig up any remaining potatoes
• Net ponds before leaves begin to fall
• Continue watering any new plants
• Start to clean out cold frames and greenhouses so they are ready for autumn
