The Perfect Complexion

Hayley McKay RGN NIP, lead clinician and proprietor at Penwortham Skin and Laser Clinic invited our writer Helen Sanderson Walker to try her clinic’s latest skin treatment – Dermapen. Photography: SusieQPhotography.co.uk

Hayley assured me this device, which has revolutionised microneedling and is loved by Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian would be ideal for my problem areas. She stressed it had little down time, was chemical free and was perfect for improving fine lines, wrinkles, scars, stretch marks and pigmentation.

Hayley stated: “I’m delighted with this product it works brilliantly alongside a number of our other clinic procedures and client feedback is amazing.”

Dermapen creates tiny punctures on the skin’s surface which trigger the healing and repair response. This response produces increased amounts of collagen and elastin, essential for more youthful looking, firmer skin. Skin tone and texture are improved giving your complexion a real makeover.

I completed my medical paperwork with Hayley and received my pre/post treatment information leaflet. My face was then thoroughly cleansed and prepped. Hayley was very reassuring and talked me through the procedure putting me at ease.

Next the Dermapen treatment began – Hayley worked the pen over my cheeks, jawline, forehead and across my nose. It did feel uncomfortable, slightly painful in some areas but bearable and in some places there was merely a scratching sensation with virtually no discomfort. This, like anything will vary from person to person depending on your pain threshold and the sensitivity of your skin.

The depth of this treatment can be tailored depending on your requirements and the advice of your practitioner. Treatment was less than 10 minutes, Hayley applied two calming serums and I was free to leave the clinic. My face felt flushed and looked like I had been to the gym or had sat in the sun.

Make up shouldn’t be worn for 24 hours and Hayley gave me a cooling face mask to apply later in the day to reduce the redness and heat. The next day the redness had completely gone and I only felt slightly tender across the scarring on my temples. The full benefits can take up to six weeks to be visible and Hayley recommends a course of three to six treatments for optimum results. I’m booked in for my next session in a few weeks but I’m already seeing reduced scarring and a fresher looking complexion and it’s only been a few days.

Hayley has run the successful clinic in Penwortham for the past five years and has recently expanded both her team and her clinic’s offerings. Alongside Hayley are Lesley O’Neill, laser practitioner with 20 years’ NHS experience, Charlotte Barnes, beautician specialising in skin care/peels and Rachel Wright clinic manager.
