VERY VEGAN…

VERY DELICIOUS!

Pay a visit to Riverside Deli to discover some surprisingly delicious produce that is totally vegan

Located on the main road through Barrowford is a delicatessen that is attracting visitors from far and wide. The reason? Riverside Deli is a vegan store selling deliciously fresh home-made cakes, wraps, stews, curries and vegan platters.

This compact little shop is full of plant-based foods that are healthy and nutritious with sections dedicated to dried goods, frozen and chilled.

Run by Andrew Fairclough and Karen Swainston-Thomas, Riverside Deli has also recently introduced an ice-cream machine serving up ice-cream that is free of dairy, gluten, egg, nut and genetically modified (GM) ingredients.

Karen, who makes the mouth-watering vegan curries and stews, says: “We have built up the vegan products that we stock and have recently introduced vegan platters which are really popular.”

Platters can be provided for five people upwards and can also include hot food. Riverside Deli recently supplied one for a birthday party in the Ribble Valley, for which Karen made a vegan jack fruit and red pepper goulash, a Sri Lankan curry and a tandoori butternut squash stew along with platters of vegan meats and salami, olives, hummus and pitta bread, falafel and vegan cheese – which was particularly popular among the guests.

“The guests said it was absolutely delicious, they couldn’t believe it was vegan!”

Much of the food at Riverside Deli cannot be bought locally: “While the vegan market is growing, we do stock unusual things. The cheeses we do are amazing!”

Riverside stocks artisan made cheeses from Tyne Chease, Nutcrafter and Mouse’s – all vegan and all equally delicious. Visitors to the shop can also find the likes of Bury vegan black pudding, maple flavoured bacon, vegan chocolate which also has antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, flavoured mineral waters and even vegan dog food!

On the counter visitors can sample a bake-of-the-day including delicious chocolate orange slices and other flavours.

Open seven days a week, Riverside Deli also features vegan beauty products from Tropic along with vegan soaps and deodorants as well as wallets, tote bags and purses by Tree Tribe – all made from teak tree leaf ‘leather’.

Being vegan herself and holding a degree in Health Sciences, Karen and Andrew, who holds a degree in Food Science, are passionate about nutrition and the benefits of a vegan diet.

They explain: “We have some vegetarian products, but we are 98 per cent vegan. People often have the misconception that vegetarian or vegan lacks taste but that’s totally untrue – it’s simply delicious and extremely nutritious!”
