Wake Up Your Garden
Spring is knocking and it’s the perfect time to lay the groundwork for a summer garden you’ll truly love. If you want a garden that’s a proper summer haven, now’s the time to get cracking
First things first, a good tidy-up. Think of it as a spring clean for your outdoor space. Dead leaves, twigs, anything that’s looking a bit worse for wear – get it gone. Give your borders a good rake, loosen up the soil and you’ll be amazed how much brighter everything looks. And while you’re at it, have a good look for any weeds that are already starting to poke through. Nip them in the bud now and you’ll save yourself a lot of work later.
Next up, feeding time. Your plants have been dormant all winter and they’re hungry for some nutrients. A good general-purpose fertiliser will do the trick, or if you’re feeling fancy, you can get specific ones for different types of plants. Just follow the instructions on the packet and you’ll be giving your garden a real boost.
If you’re thinking about planting anything new, now’s the time to get those seeds started indoors. Tomatoes, peppers, anything that needs a bit of a head start – get them sown in trays or pots and keep them somewhere warm and bright. By the time the weather has properly warmed up, they’ll be ready to go outside.
And don’t forget about your lawn. Give it a good mow, but don’t cut it too short just yet. A light trim will encourage it to thicken up and you’ll have a lush green carpet in no time. If you’ve got any bare patches, make sure you reseed them.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – it’s still a bit chilly out there. And you’re right. But that’s why you’ve got to be smart about it. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and if there’s a risk of frost, make sure you’ve got some fleece or horticultural fleece handy to protect any tender plants.
Finally, take a moment to enjoy the process. Get out there, get your hands dirty and breathe in the fresh spring air. There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching your garden come to life after a long winter. And by putting in a bit of effort now, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful, thriving garden that you can enjoy all summer long. So, get out there and make the most of it!
