WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES…

Opportunities abound at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, where children of primary school age are way ahead in terms of developing their full potential

When children join Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, a whole new world of opportunities opens up. There is top class teaching, a first class activities programme as well as flexi boarding and the chance to make friends from around the world.

If you are considering the school for your child, the opportunities are endless so it makes sense to make your choice earlier rather than later, as the school’s Headmaster Ian Murphy explains: “For many parents it seems a natural progression to move their child at the age of 11 when they finish primary school. While primary schools focus on the core of maths and English, children don’t experience the breadth and richness that they would have had if they had come to us earlier, with our international curriculum and specialist subject teaching.

“When children come to the school aged 11 they can be quite behind in terms of exposure to modern foreign languages, a high calibre sporting programme as well as very advanced music and drama opportunities. Many other schools don’t tend to have specialist teaching in those subjects, so it can take a while for some children to close the gap when they join us.”

“When you consider what is available here, the opportunities and the expert quality of the staff, it is certainly worth considering gaining that experience as early as possible.”

The school has a carefully managed nurturing environment, in which the specialist teaching staff genuinely understand the needs and aspirations of young pupils.

“We have teachers of excellent calibre, who are highly skilled at inspiring the youngsters. They are experts, yet can see their subject and passion through the eyes of a nine-year-old.”

In terms of opportunities at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, the Performing Arts department is a perfect example of how the school involves all pupils.

Ninety pupils are currently involved in the performing arts London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts programme, plus a year group production of Annie with eight and nine year olds. Last December saw The Wiz that involved all of Year 6, while Westside Story takes centre stage this summer.

“The Performing Arts department is truly exceptional across music, drama and dance,” adds Mr Murphy. “All pupils are given the opportunity to become involved in productions at a professional level theatre. From a young age, it gives them a platform that enables the child to unlock their potential and discover their talent, which can be nurtured and developed.”

Similarly, in sport girls and boys have the opportunity to work with tennis professional JJ Garcia with access to the all-year-round Glassbrook Tennis Dome. Rugby too plays a part at the school along with netball, hockey, cricket, swimming and some football.

“The children have access to top level coaching whether that is professional rugby, professional tennis or elite cricket. We are tremendously lucky to have all the facilities we need available here on the Stonyhurst campus. It really is transformative for our pupils.”

Pupils at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall also have access to the world famous Stonyhurst collections of historic artefacts from around the globe.

“This really is hands-on learning as the pupils can share, and often handle, the historic treasures that link to their curriculum learning. The treasures are too many to mention but include a crucifix and hat belonging to Thomas More, a prayer book of Anne Boleyn’s and a rare first folio of Shakespeare. Not to mention dinosaur bones and an Egyptian mummy – this is simply not possible in any other school.”

The extremely comprehensive Activities Programme provides opportunities in everything from cross country to astronomy in Stonyhurst’s historic observatory.

In terms of value too, sending your child to Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall from the age of seven is a sound decision as the package you receive from this age is all inclusive and cost effective.

After school activities, homework (studies) and supper are included in the school day which begins at 8.20am and finishes at 6pm – the perfect solution for busy hard-working parents!

With average class sizes of just 15, the school welcomes children and families from all faiths and backgrounds. All can benefit and grow from the Jesuit mission and identity that underpins the whole education experience, encouraging even the youngest pupils to be active, curious, grateful, wise, hopeful and eloquent – attributes that are relevant across all age groups.

“When children grow in self-belief, they also develop resilience. We give pupils access to some truly excellent teachers and innovative wrap-around care. Children can achieve anything if they have the platform and the inspiration.”

“Indeed, the school’s reputation for success, following an outstanding review in the latest Good Schools Guide, is so renowned that some year groups are already running waiting lists for next September.”

“We have families from all different walks of life, some are privileged, some are from overseas, but most are from hard-working families who are proud to be at the heart of the Stonyhurst community.”
