Your Child Doesn’t Need

To Go Far, To Go Far…

It has been extraordinary year so far at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall as it adds to its already impressive facilities

“Fun, exciting – the best school ever!” Laughter can be heard in every area of Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, one of the fastest growing independent preparatory schools in the North of England, as children experience the perfect balance of high academic standards in a friendly, stimulating and fun environment.

Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall is the Preparatory School for Stonyhurst College, providing the first steps in a seamless education from age three to 18. Stonyhurst is a Roman Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, offering an excellent education for boarders and day pupils alike. Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall is a place of enthusiastic learning, achievement and energy, with a genuine sense of family.

The school has a highly personalised approach to children’s learning following the International Primary Curriculum up to the age of 11. At 11+ the Stonyhurst College HODs take responsibility for the academic programme, which means that children benefit from the leadership, development and pastoral support of a prep school system but with the academic stretch that comes with being taught by secondary subject specialists.

Bringing to life their learning in class, teachers and children have access to the artefacts and curator expertise of the oldest museum in the English speaking world, the Stonyhurst Collections. The museum contains over 50,000 objects and books, including a wide and rich collection of natural history pieces, a first folio by William Shakespeare, Egyptian mummies, fossilised dinosaur dung and a prayer book that was once the property of Mary Queen of Scots. One of more than 40 clubs and activities on offer to Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall children, the ‘Young Curators’ group, gives children the opportunity to handle and categorise these artefacts.

The pupils at St Mary’s Hall are aware of their responsibility to maximize their unique talents and thrive as they engage in the school’s broad and innovative activities programme. The school is proud of its strong sporting tradition with high levels of performance in traditional sports, cross country and swimming.

This year tennis goes under cover with the opening of a new tennis dome run to LTA standards. Drama is another area offering creative excellence across the school which engages, stretches and inspires young people. Investment this year continues in the creation of a performing arts ‘Drama and Music Hub’.

Other excellent facilities include a new science lab, an art studio, a swimming pool, sports hall and a theatre, in which all children have their drama lessons.

The school offers an outstanding boarding experience and sense of belonging. The boarders are cared for by houseparents, who are supported by an enthusiastic and caring team. While boarders are given maximum support and supervision, they are encouraged to do things for themselves, keep track of their timetable and manage their time effectively.

Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall is a very safe, nurturing, vibrant and warm-hearted child-centered environment within a beautiful and extensive rural location. The school prides itself on being creative and innovative with a genuine ambition for each individual. The school successfully blends high performance with opportunity and engagement for the less confident by being challenging yet supporting in equal measures.
