July is Independent Retailer Month, a campaign to highlight the important role small, local, independent retailers play in the communities they serve and their contribution to the local economy

The Independent Retailer initiative is based on research showing that for every £1 spent locally, around 50p to 70p of that money recirculates back into the local economy, whereas for the same £1 spent out of town or online, only 5p trickles back to the local community.

The campaign’s aim is to help boost the local economy and the community, and the vision is to help change consumer habits for the long term, creating more sustainable towns and communities.

We are very lucky to have thriving high streets such as those in Clitheroe, Whalley and Longridge offering so much, and treasures to be found in many of the smaller villages such as Ribchester and Waddington – all in truly picturesque surroundings, but they all need our support.

With so many amazing independent retailers in the Ribble Valley, you are sure to find what you are looking for, whether it is a gift, clothing, homeware, artwork or specialist food and drinks. These shops offer unique shopping experiences where you can get advice and recommendations from retailers, who really know their products and customers and have a real passion for what they do.

You can’t get this experience shopping online.

Shopping locally also provides the opportunity to find original, individual and artisan items you will love, and is of course better for the environment, helping to cut down the miles our products travel.

All in all, Independent Retailer Month is the perfect excuse to treat yourself and feel good doing it!
